I need to create an init script for an IRC logger. I copied /etc/init.d/skeleton. I filled in the configuration section to fit my needs and I also had to add --background to the start daemon command since my IRC logger doesn't split off. The logger starts up fine when I use my init script, but it doesn't create the .pid file like it should. As a result the process cannot be stopped unless I find out the process ID myself and kill it. Here is the script:

I have a small home server with 256MB of memory. One of my sites just got linked up on Reddit, and since I've had two occurrences of the system using too much memory and crashing to the point where I have to manually reboot. There are times when my physical memory usage rises dangerously high to 90%, and my mysql and apache services each consume about 100MB. I suspect what is happening is that a rush of visitors comes, and the system uses too much memory before it can move some to swap space (which I have around 750MB of). Should this problem even be happening? Is the only solution to get more memory? I've heard about a swappability setting in Linux that could be messed with, maybe that could help.

Any suggestions? This problem is annoying.

I need to port my Perl log handling script to Python. Here is a simple example of a Perl script I can use:

As you can probably see, I am telling the system to beep whenever a request is made to test the script. Everything works fine on this one, but when I try a Python script such as this:

import os

for line in sys.stdin:
    os.system('beep')

everything runs but the system does not beep after a request. Here are the lines I was and am using in my apache configuration file:

CustomLog "|perl /var/web/onhit.pl" "onhit"   <-OLD LINE
CustomLog "|python /var/web/onhit.py" "onhit" <-NEW LINE

I am following this email on the Python mailing list. Anyone have an idea why this is not working?

EDIT: I know the problem has something to do with "for line in sys.stdin". For some reason it is just not detecting anything in stdin. I have no idea whether it is my python script or my apache configuration causing this, though.

I have an SSH installed on my Ubuntu server. I can log into it from my Ubuntu desktop, using a user and a password. I can only access SSH from my LAN, since the SSH port is not forwarded on my router. Do I need to set up an RSA key for a setup like this? From what I understand the SSH is secure since it cannot be accessed from the Internet.

On a side note, what other things should I double check for security? I have Apache, MySQL and ProFTPD running.

I have an Linux server running Ubuntu Jaunty. I have successfully set up an FTP server for the user 'fileserver' using this configuration in proftpd.conf:

I this allows only the 'fileserver' user to login, and nobody else. I am able to upload files fine. This is what I want so far. The problem is, I cannot edit, overwrite, delete or move any files. I would like to have full, unrestricted access when I log in. How can I do this?

I've seen this ProFTPD tutorial, but I still can't figure out how to allow a user to have all the permissions, to enable deletes and edits.
