I want to install the SMTP service for IIS 6 on windows server 2003. The GUI process is explained here on technet. Then I want to configure the properties (e.g. first retry interval) and create new domains etc.
Can I script this using powershell (or any other scrpting for that matter). If yes can you point me to some resources or even give me some script samples to get me started.
I am local admin on a windows server 2003 R2 machine in our domain. This machine was built about 3 years back and I am not sure what privilges I might have. If I use ntrights.exe (from resource kit tools) it is succesful as shown below:
ntrights.exe +r SeServiceLogonRight -u domain\accountname
Granting SeServiceLogonRight to domain\accountname ... successful
Recently we have build a new windows server 2008 R2 machine and I am local admin on it. But now the same ntrights.exe fails as below:
ntrights.exe +r SeServiceLogonRight -u domain\accountname
Granting SeServiceLogonRight to domain\accountname OpenPolicy:
***Error*** OpenPolicy -1073741790
It seems I am missing some privileges despite being local admin. What privileges do I require so that I can ask our system administrator for helping me to grant those privileges ?
Edit: The problem is solved by changing the UAC settings to Never Notify using the slider from control panel -> user accounts settings. But I think this is not the best way to solve this issue. Other answers still welcome.
I develop a .Net WCF web service hosted as a windows service on Windows XP for development and Windows Server 2003 SP2 for deployment. We install several instances of the service (one for each logical environment) in one machine. After a certain number of instances the windows service fails to startup. The number of services that can be simultaneously running varies. The services run with a specific service account that has local admin rights. I have even created a simple windows service in .Net that does no WCF but just logs a timestamp to a log file and the behaviour is still the same. After certain number of services have been started the next one doesn't start. If I stop one of the running service and then try to start the service that failed it starts up. I am 100% sure it is nothing to do with application code. The number of instances that can be started increases after I reboot the machine but eventually it will hit a limit.
The error message when trying to start up from service control panel is

Can anyone give me some ideas on what can be causing this error.
I tried to install Vmware workstation 7.0 and Vmwware player 3.0 in a windows server 2008 machine and got the following error immediately after installation starts "Error: This product can only be installed on Windows XP or later. Windows 95, 98, ME, NT and 2000 are not supported"
What can be the reason for this strange error.

I have a license for Windows Server 2008 Enterprise which I got it from the Heroes Happen Here 2008 event that I have installed on a box at my home. I use that box for .Net development. Can I upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 with that license or am I stuck with the pre R2 version. If I can upgrade where can I get the DVD image for R2 to download for the upgrade.
I want to use the new Dublin hosting environment that is available as an IIS extension.
