I am currently looking into the possibility/feasibility of using Custom Fields in Active Directory for storing information per user within our domain network, but have a few questions regarding the custom fields themselves, namely:
Is it possible for our Windows domain users to reset their own NT password at Windows 7 login screen?
To clarify, we have a corporate network with lots of Windows 7 users. When they forget their passwords, rather than calling IT Support, could they be prompted to answer some security questions, to ultimately reset their own password?
Out of the blue over the weekend, something strange has happened to my email server at work, as it suddenly stopped receiving emails. This has nothing to do with the server, but more to the fact that my mail.mydomain.com was being ignored.
Ping tests to mail.mydomain.com stopped working, although other.mydomain.com continued to work fine.
I've spent three hours on the phone to my ISP (BT) about it, and they couldn't help, except to find that it wasn't their fault.
As a workaround, I've used the 'other' A record (within my domain name DNS settings) to do what I need it to do (including adjusting my MX record accordingly), but despite deleting and re-adding the 'mail' A record, the mail.mydomain.com simply will not ping correctly, whereas other.mydomain.com will (both end up at the same machine on my network).
The TTL on the DNS settings for the domain name is 86400s, so maybe it's a waiting game, but having not changed anything on the domain name DNS settings for at least a year, it seems odd that such a thing would happen.
Any suggestions as to where I need to look to investigate further?
I've got a Windows 2003 SBS box, running Exchange Server 2003, as expected.
Office PCs can use this fantastically well using Exchange connections, and I've got some POP3 connections from outside too, no problem here.
My iPad can connect to Exchange using an Exchange connection and I can send/receive emails as normal. So, too, does my Windows Mobile 7 device, using an Exchange connection.
However, trying to get my home PC running Outlook 2010 to connect using an Exchange connection is a problem and I keep getting the following error during configuration of the connection inside of Outlook:
"The name cannot be resolved. The connection to the Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online of connected to complete this action."
If I set the option to always ask for the credentials, I get the following error:
"Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."
Any suggestions as to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.
I have a WP7 device and since I first had it, I have instantly been able to sync with 2x different Exchange servers, each running from a completely seperate domain (i.e. different businesses entirely).
Now, only one works, as the other constantly gives me the following error:
Outlook error
Not updated
Update the date and time on your phone and try connecting again.

I have followed all advice in terms of the date and time on my WP7, but it's not that, as the other Exchange account works fantastically well, leading me to believe that it's the server on the failing Exchange account.
The server appears fine - I can access webmail externally, or via Outlook on a PC internally as I always have done. The date and time on that server doesn't appear to be very much 'out' either.
Any thoughts and ideas?
I have installed Windows 2003 Server R2 on a machine from scratch and by default, Windows 2003 Server is locked down, but now I need to open access to it from my corporate network.
From the server, I can access other servers on the network, I can also access the internet.
What do I need to do, in order to gain access to shares on this server, etc?

I have a license for Windows 2008 Server R2 but I wanted to set it up as a virtual server running on another box, but I am having problems installing it due to the fact that it thinks it's a 32 bit operating system because of Virtual PC.
The plan was to create the VHD of the Windows 2008 Server using my desktop and then move it onto the server when it was ready; My desktop runs Windows 7 64 bit and thought I could install the 64 bit version of Server 2008 but the installation stops me saying that the host environment is 32 bit, where it's not.
Is there a way to do what I want to do? Different software, etc?

I have a web-server that has no accessible DVD drive, but have a license for SQL Server 2008 on disc...
Uploading the entire contents of the DVD is proving to be nigh-on impossible, so was wondering, if I downloaded and installed the trial version of SQL Server 2008 from Microsoft, could I then enter my license key, making the trial version into a fully licensed version?
We're looking into the idea of moving an ASP.NET MVC app into Windows Azure, but I'm interested to hear if SQL Azure is safe enough for me to store customer data, such as their home addresses, etc.
We're not storing bank details or anything like that, and are looking to utilise the power of the cloud for scalablity reasons, but didn't want the security factor to be a blocking issue.
Any thoughts? Or should I encrypt ALL personal data and decrypt on-access each time?
Just curious at this stage, but can two Exchange servers sync-up across a remote distance, like another continent, to run two offices sharing the same domain name / email address?
Also, would there be a problem if one of the servers was an SBS box?
Is it possible to install Exchange 2003 on a 2008 Server?
I am trying to do this, but am facing all sorts of problems, such as the installer quitting before doing anything.

I've got a box with Windows Server 2008 Std installed, and I've created a virtual PC with Windows 2003 Server SBS on it, and am running it through Virtual Server 2005.
I've set the new 2003 server up using the same domain name credentials as the existing (host) server, and was hoping that they'd 'just talk', sharing the existing set of user details that are set up on the host, across into the 2003 server... but it's not at present.
Is this because I haven't yet configured them correctly, or have I wasted my time because this scenario just will not work?
I setup a server for myself about 6 months ago but have only recently noticed that the network shares all have a default maximum size of 1GB.
How do I adjust this upwards, as I have other servers that do not have this restriction in place?

I am trying to get the Exchange Routing Engine to start on a Windows 2003 Server SBS box, to no avail.
I have followed TechNet's guide and have used the Windows 2003 Server CDs to reinstall Exchange using the /disasterrecovery setting, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
I have a Windows 2003 SBS Server (SP2) that suddenly has a problem starting the IIS Admin Service.
This not only means that intranet sites are no longer available to the users but more importantly, Exchange has a service-dependency on the IIS Admin Service, meaning that Exchange won't run either.
I've found blogs online (such as this one) that say about uninstalling IIS, but it also says nearer the bottom that on restart, the problem happens again.
