How to setup Pootle tranlation server on Ubuntu?

I'm trying to setup Pootle translation service on Ubuntu. Unfortunately I'm stuck at running the Pootle server.

I have setup all the required software packages (pootle, translate-toolkit and others) manually. Then if I run ./PootleServer from the installation directory it runs flawlessly.

/usr/src/Pootle-2.1.5# ./PootleServer

But when I'm trying to run PootleServer with "PootleServer" command I get the following error. Obviously Pootle expects /usr/share/pootle directory to exist, and it is NOT. /usr/share/pootle is missing. Do you know why?

What is the best hosting option for Flash web-widget?

Our Flash web-widget has got highly popular. It is downloaded around 100,000 times per day. And that is the problem. Our server bandwidth is too narrow to deliver the widget to the clients fast. The widget is loaded very slow. Probably 20 times slower than before (at peak times).

Probably I have choosen not the right hoster for my task - delivering 1 MB Flash widget to 100,000 users per day. What is the best hosting solution in my case?

I'm not good at server administration so forgive me if I sound naive.

The details are the following.

Our hoster options:
-Dedicated server, Ubuntu
-10 Mbit Connection
-monthly bandwidth limit: 2000 GB

Widget size is 1 MB.
The widget consists of the main SWF and a number of loaded SWF and data files.

Can I make TCP/IP session to run less than 60 seconds?

Our server is overloaded with TCP/IP sessions, we have 1200 - 1500 of them. Most of them are hanging in TIME_OUT state. It turns out that a connection in TIME_OUT state occupies a socket until 60 second time-out is elapsed.

The problem is that the server gets unresponsive and many clients are not getting served.

I have made a simple test: download an XML file from the server with Internet Explorer 8.0 The download finishes in a fraction of second. But then I see that the TCP/IP connection is hanging in TIME_OUT state for 60 seconds.

Is there any way to get rid of TIME_OUT waiting or make it less to free the socket for new connections?

I understand why TCP/IP connection enters TIME_OUT state, but I don't understand why Internet Explorer does not close the connection after the XML file download is over.

The details.

Our server runs web service written in Perl (mod-perl). The service provides weather data to clients. Client is a Flash appication (actually Flash ActiveX control embedded in Windows application).

Why the server is not responding?

Our server occasionally refuses to serve a simple HTML page.

This is happening during a relatively high number of requests. However, the processor is not heavy loaded and there are a lot of free memory. The error seems to occure 1 out of 50 requests in average, depending on the server load.

I need to find the source of the problem and take the appropriate actions to eliminate it.

I have a suspicion that the problem source is a huge number of incoming network packets. There are 5000 packets per second on average. Traffic - 2 MBits/sec Can this be the cause of the error?

There is an interesting thing, in case the server fails to respond, the request string is not logged to access.log by Apache.

The error is repeatable from several client computers. DNS is not involved, since I have accessed the server by the IP.

I have profiled the problem case with tcpdump utility. These are the good and bad sessions traced by tcpdump. The request is the same in both experiments. Good - server returns response. Bad - no response, time-out error.

Why a web server can be unresponsive?

We host our web-service on a dedicated server. During high-load period, the server returns a time-out error instead of a page very frequently. We have around 170,000 daily requests. However, server has a lot of free memory and the CPU is not loaded at the moment.

The code is relatively simple. The script downloads the weather from another server, converts data format and returns XML response. The weather is cached in MyISAM DB. There is a world locations data-base (INNODB) that can also be requested via the script.

HTTP request does not reach the server occasionally. Why?

We host our web-service on a dedicated server. Sometimes (I'd say 1 out of 20) a response is not received from the server. That makes the browser fallback with time-out error.

An important detail: the request is not logged by Apache in this case. The server is not loaded, there are a lot of free memory and CPU power left.

How to filter http traffic in Wireshark?

I suspect my server has a huge load of http requests from its clients. I want to measure the volume of http traffic. How can I do it with Wireshark? Or probably there is an alternative solution using another tool?
