I have a PERC H700 running in a Dell R410 server which works fine. However when I try to update the firmware using the Dell package I get a message "This update package is not compatible with your system..."
I tried using the Lifecyle Controller to update and that didn't pickup any updates so it didn't help. How can I get the H700 firmware updated on a Dell system such as this?
I have a Dell md3000i with dual raid controller modules (dual port) and have been using it for years with great success. I got a warning that the battery needed to be replaced in module 1 (age). So I bought two on eBay just in case the other module needs the same. I removed the module and replaced the battery. I'm connected to a Dell PowerConnect 6248 managed switch.
When I online'd module 1 the entire network, i.e. web sites etc. appeared extremely degraded and I'm not seeing steady/reliable network activity lights on the two data ports on the module. No amber lights anywhere on the unit or module. It appears something has gone bad or config lost on the iSCSI data ports. I have even tried going back to the original battery, same issue.
I can ping and connect to the management port and I can offline and online the module but it seems to be in some network contention either to failed ports/board or a config problem? I've tried everything I can think of to even rerunning the discovery software to try to connect and reconfigure the module but it won't discover the md3000i at all when module 1 is online. If I offline module 1 it will but then I can't configure the iSCSI ports on module 1 if it's offline. When I try to even access the iSCSI configuration from the management utility I get "Unable to obtain current iSCSI network settings for RAID controller module 1 port 1 (then after ok I get the same for port 0).
I reviewed the command line interface manual and even tried resetting the config on module 1, no change. I'm out of support and I even tried calling in to get configuration help but they won't unless I pay $600 which I don't want to do.
Any help would be appreciated. The unit is running fine on only module 0 but I obviously don't have the redundancy.

I am running MS SQL 2014 Standard and have a Dell MD 3000i iSCSI SAN. Rough specs:
Dell R610 With PERC H700 controlling 6 x 2.5" 15K SAS drives (6 GB/s) Dell MD3000i with 14 x 3.5" 15K SAS drives (drives are 6 GB/s but MD3000i only supports up to 3 GB/s)
I have been using the SAN with no issues but I have 250 GB unused on a separate partition on the server so I figured why not take advantage of the faster drives for the databases that require better performance, i.e. app sync, fast lookups, etc. I did a backup/restore to move the databases keeping the log files on the SAN and the MDF's on the server.
I'm not so sure this was a good move and I'm surprised to see what may be that the SAN is outperforming the server drives. Maybe due to more spindles or 3.5 vs. 2.5" drives?? I'm going to give it a week (maybe) but I may end up moving the databases back. Using SQL Monitor (Red Gate) here are some stats over the past 24 hour period:
Server:
Disk avg. read time for sql1 > D: Min 0 ms Max 37.2 ms Mean 2.7 ms
Disk avg. write time for sql1 > D: Min 0 ms Max 3.5 ms Mean 0.2 ms

In one small test my iOS app that was syncing in 45ms is now syncing in 62ms, I expected that to be faster.
What is the better storage? Server or SAN?
Our servers are on a workgroup, we are a small company and do not use a domain controller. In Windows Server 2008 R2 we used TimeSync to help keep the most accurate time, not sure it was really necessary. We're reloading our servers with Windows Server 2012 R2 and wondering if the default Windows time sync is sufficient or if we should use TimeSync again? A small windows service.

I purchased 12 sticks of RAM on eBay to go into a Dell R610 server. The RAM is ECC REG PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 yet when I occupy all 12 slots with this ram I get the following error on boot:
MEMORY Initialization Warning: Memory Size May be Reduced MEMBIST failure – The following DIMM has been disabled by Bios: DIMM B2 MEMBIST failure – The following DIMM has been disabled by Bios: DIMM B5
I am using all of the latest versions, BIOS, etc. I am using 2 x x5660 processors.
What is causing this issue and is it correctable?
If this RAM is incorrect what is correct to maximize the RAM on this server?

I'm running Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition with IIS 7.5. I have TFS 2013 Update 2 installed and for whatever reason I cannot connect to my web site which requires Windows Auth while remote desktop'd onto the server, however, if I connect via a browser externally or from within Visual Studio 2013 I can connect fine. The problem is that the build system needs to connect to TFS from the same server and therefore cannot authenticate via Windows Auth.
I tried removing/reinstalling Windows Authentication in the roles manager, that didn't make any difference. I've tried changing the Windows Auth options, again, no difference. I tried adding the https site to the Intranet settings in the windows control panel Internet options area - again, no change.
Why from within the server itself can I not authenticate with Windows auth but if I connect via a web browser external to the server I can?

I am setting up a Dell 6248 combining separate switches used previously. I am planning the following architecture:
VLAN 1 - External traffic (each server's public interface connects to this)
VLAN 2 - Internal communications (server to server via GiGe - each server's internal interface connects to this. This network is a 192.168.1.* range
VLAN 3 - iSCSI network - 192.168.2.* range (iSCSI participating servers have an interface connecting to this along with the iSCSI device
VLAN 4 - iSCSI secondary/MPIO network - 192.168.3.* (iSCSI participating servers and iSCSI device connected)
My question is in the scenario above, is it even required to separate any of these into separate VLAN's or does the switch automatically manage who can handle what? Secondarily, if public is it's own VLAN, can VLAN's 2, 3, and 4 be a single VLAN or does 192.168.1, 192.168.2, and 192.168.3 require VLAN isolation?

I've always used TimeSync on my servers. With Windows' built in internet time updating, should I remove TimeSync? I've never turned off windows time updating even with TimeSync - what is the best setup?
I have an asp.net 4 e-commerce web site on my Windows Server 2008 R2 web server. I upload an updated DLL to the /bin folder and of course the site recompiles. It's a web site project, not web application. More times than not the site will not come back up, I'll get a service unavailable error (503 I think). I have to RDP into the server and do an IISRESET to bring it back up. Unfortunately this cycles everything on the server.
Why does this happen and how can I prevent it? How can I have the site recompile successfully when the /bin folder changes and not have IIS time out or whatever is causing this error?

Over this past weekend we had severe storms here in Virginia and of course the crisis in Japan is a reminder that things can go bad in a heartbeat! A question I ask myself "What if a tornado hit my data center, am I prepared?"
I have great backup systems "in my rack" including a tape backup. Because the data center is not close moving tapes off site is not possible. What I'd like to find or create is a system that on a schedule that can backup critical items such as web sites, databases, and copy them remotely, i.e. my server at home. I have FIOS with 35 mbit service so I have the broadband, what I need is the "system" to do this. I am a programmer so I could create something that FTP's down information on a schedule, but I'm curious if there is something out there that would fill this remote backup need now? My SQL Servers are backed up to storage arrays, I could bring those backups down or even schedule my SQL server here to sync with the production servers on a schedule. I use Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2.
What do you all recommend for off site strategy in a crisis such as a natural disaster knocking out our data center? Are you prepared? I hope others ask themselves this question and learn from these natural disasters we've been seeing all too frequently.
I had a site stop working today and when I RDP'd into the server I saw a warning about low disk space. The first thing I checked was the inetpub folder where the log files are stored and sure enough it was huge, 40 GB huge. I do clean the files monthly but what is causing a day's worth of logging on a medium activity site (www.vbdotnetforums.com) to create 300-500 MB log files? I do have everything being logged so my SmarterStats software gives me the most info, but are there specific things I should/can turn off that is causing the most growth in these log files?
Also, sure would be nice if Microsoft someday had some sort of log file management such as deleting log files after they exceed a certain size (total), X days, etc. We all have to come up with some solution to delete the old ones manually.

Since .NET 4 is backward compatible, can't all app pools be set to use .NET 4 without changing your web site? Or will web.config's need to be updated simply from the app pool change?
I have a Verizon FIOS 50/20 internet setup. My servers are in a Tier III+ data center (pryme.net) in Ashburn, no limits on my rack, GiGe everything, etc. I can download a file from a linux box behind my firewall at 6 MB/sec, yet on Windows 2003 (IIS 6) I only get 2.7 MB/sec.
Why is it that linux can provide a faster file download than Windows?
Is there anything that can be done in IIS to resolve this issue?
