I have a computer that has a fileshare (Windows Server 2012). When I looked at the sessions, I saw a computer named tina2. There is no current computer on our network named tina2. When I investigated, it turns out that the computer shown as tina2 is in fact GRE-V-QS02 (Windows Server 2016).

For some reason, GRE-V-QS02 is masquerading on the fileshare as tina2.

Does anyone know what could be going on? I've checked the control panel, and the computer name is correct.

How do I get GRE-V-QS02 to stop showing up as tina2 in the Shared Folders > Sessions list.

I have a Windows Server 2016 (Build 14393) that I'm running NPrinting on (possibly not relevant). I performed an update on Friday night, and I am seeing EventID=300 errors. Below is the full text of the warning.

I've noticed that the errors only flood in when my Powershell ISE (Powershell 5.1.14393.3866) is open. And boy, do they flood in.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated

TL;DR How do I reference an AD group for folder permissions before my computer has joined the domain?

I'm setting up an Ubuntu system to interface with the orgs Active Directory. I've read that private groups on the Linux machine is not the best idea and that I should use AD groups.

How do I reference AD groups when my machine hasn't joined the domain yet? Right now, I use ansible to set everything up, but I still have to do the following steps for it to become part of the domain.

sudo kinit Administrator
sudo net ads join -k
sudo systemctl start sssd.service

I was thinking of just creating a private group devops, and hoping that since the names were the same between linux and AD that it would automatically link up. That seems too easy, so I thought I'd ask.

As of now, I'm looking at using RemoteApps to allow RDP oriented access to applications. I would like the applications presented to users to be based on the users Group membership.

Right now, the org is fairly small, and the directory doesn't even have any OUs(organizational or location). I was wondering where I should put these "Application" groups in the directory. I've thought of creating a group right under the domain (contoso.com) but I would rather seek guidance before mauling the directory structure.

This may be a broad question, so any resources about how to architect app access with AD would also be appreciated.

I'm using Terraform with AWS. Currently in my setup, I have an Auto Scaling Group used in conjunction with Code Deploy. When I deploy into Code Deploy, it copies the initial ASG, and deletes it. The issue is that when I run 'terraform plan/apply', it wants to recreate the original ASG, and repoint my Code Deploy group.

Obviously, this breaks things. Is there a way I can tell Terraform to leave my ASG/CodeDeploy stuff alone? I would comment out the modules containing these items, but I'm scared Terraform will look at the current state, see that some components are missing, and try to delete them.

I'm using an AWS RDS MySql (5.7.19) installation and I need to do some date conversions. Most docs say that you need to have the timezone tables populated, to do anything.

Is there a way to set the timezone tables in this current setup?

I can do things like

SELECT CONVERT_TZ( NOW(), @@session.time_zone, '-04:00' );

But I'm concerned about the daylight savings times coming into play.

I'm on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard server and I have a CSR that I've created and I've got the GoDaddy issued cert. But when I go to "Certificate Enrollment Requests" I don't see anything except for this key. I've tested my CSR and my key on sslshopper, and it says they match, but I can't figure out how to tell my computer "This key matches this CSR".

Is there a way I can push my CSR into the computer (the same one that generated it) and then tell it "use this key"?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a Windows server, and it's missing the Start Menu button. It's got the charms, but I'd rather not wait for them to appear after moving my mouse.

I've tried the guides online, but they seem to be outdated as all they do is add folders to the Taskbar.

I'm using the Powershell Desired State Configuration to set up a server. The server needs a SQL Client msi installed. As a logged in user, I'm able to click the msi, and install it with no problems. However, when I attempt to install it through PowerShelll

I get the following error.

I'm not sure why policy would prevent the powershell from running, but still allow me to click it to run it. Does anyone have an idea of what the hangup could be? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a Powershell DSC I am using to configure a web server. My server will need the URL Rewrite module, so I've gotten that code from a Github gist found at:

My issue is that when the DSC runs into my block:

At first I thought my server might have a bad proxy setting, so I checked to see if I could download the file at all with this statement:

Lo and behold, the file appeared right on the desktop clocking in at 6,12 MB as expected.

So I'm at a loss, why would my DSC not be able to get the http stream? I'm running it as Administrator, so all functionality should be available, but maybe I've forgotten to set something.

Unfortunately for me, it seems like "A parameter cannot be found..." is an extremely common and ambiguous error, saying that there is a problem, but never where. I was wondering if anyone could tell why this error is occuring. Oh, and I'm on Windows 7 and my PS Version is

I am searching for the occurrence of a string in a field on a table. The search statement is done through dynamic sql with my statement template looking like this.

SET @sSQL = 'UPDATE #tempProcsAndJobs SET ' + 
  @columnName + ' = 1 WHERE createStatement LIKE ''%' + 
  @columnName + '%''';

EXECUTE (@sSQL);

The above sql produces something similar to

UPDATE #tempProcsAndJobs SET LoadSummaryTotalSales = 1 
   WHERE createStatement LIKE '%LoadSummaryTotalSales%'

This approach is usually effective, until it runs into something like

UPDATE #tempProcsAndJobs SET Nightly SXe Data Transfers = 1 
  WHERE createStatement LIKE '%Nightly SXe Data Transfers%'

Then it complains about a syntax error. I've tried using CHARINDEX, and the same problem arises, the server hates spaces and dashes. I was wondering if anyone knew how to get around this.

Does anyone have an idea of how to generate the Create statement for a SQL Agent Job? I've looked everywhere, and I can't seem to find a search result that doesn't involve using SSMS and going through the Object Explorer. I've gone off and found the [msdb].[dbo].[sysjobsteps] table, where it has the UID of the job, and the steps. My idea was to group by job_id, order by step_id and then flounder around for a while before figuring out how to concatenate. But I thought I would ask here before proceeding down that path.

I am looking to "move" databases to different servers with minimal disruption to data and service. These databases vary in size from 5GB to 140 GB.

I've seen and even used some of the various data transfer tools of SQL Server but I'm unsure of what the best practice is out of (Detach/Reattach, Restore from Backup, Ship Transaction Logs, Mirror...).

My biggest fear is that these databases have lots of stored procs, user permissions and various indexes and I don't want to lose them and end up disrupting service.

My latest hare-brained idea is to set up a mirror, and then initiate a manual failover. However, I'd rather ask before proceeding with something I've never done before.

TL;DR What are some of the best practices way of moving a SQL Server database that minimizes the threat of service disruption.
