When I press ctrl-alt-del on a particular windows 2003 server, the Username and Password fields are greyed out, so I can't login.
I'm logging in remotely using VNC if that makes any difference, but my colleague has checked the real console and gets the same results.
I've got a script that SSHes several servers using public key authentication. One of the servers has stopped letting the script log in due to a configuration issue, which means that the script gets stuck with a "Password:" prompt, which it obviously cannot answer, so it doesn't even try the rest of the servers in the list.
Is there a way to tell the ssh client not to prompt for a password if key authentication fails, but instead to just report an error connecting and let my script carry on?
I take backups of a server with rsync, but those backups are quite large, and I'd like to compress them. Is there a way to have some sort of wrapper around rsync to gunzip the file in the backup, rsync the changes from the live file, then re-gzip the file as soon as it is copied?
I.e. if the source files on the live are foo, bar and baz, the backup has foo.gz, bar.gz and baz.gz.
To restate: I want compressed files at one end and uncompressed files at the other end. I don't want to compress before rsyncing, because even with --rsyncable, it makes rsync less efficient. I know about the -z option to rsync. I don't have space on the backup machine to store all the files uncompressed.
I'm trying to set up rsync to copy the data from a server every day. In order to make the system as restricted as possible, I'm trying to use the mode described in the man page as: "USING RSYNC-DAEMON FEATURES VIA A REMOTE-SHELL CONNECTION"
So I've put a file called rsyncd.conf in roots home folder:

and tried to copy /etc/passwd over as a test:
rsync -vv -e ssh myserver::root/etc/passwd .
But I get the following:

The reason I am doing all this is that once I get it working, I plan to restrict access by specifying the command
rsync --server --daemon .
in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
