I have a data mix of 100Gb to backup. Data inside it comprehend:

• JPEG big photos (5Mb)
• Autocad DWG files
• some Word .doc
• some Photoshop .PSD

All the data come from 5 win7/winXP in a 1000gb lan.

I need a sort of ideal ;) backup strategy that helps me in reducing the on-line backup storage costs (around 0.80$ per GB) and/or management time (I can burn a DVD every week but not more frequently than that). I got a small linux silent server with:

• 120gb 2.5" hd for the o.s.
• 2 x 250gb 2.5" hdd in soft raid 1 for that data
• 1 external USB 500gb hd for backup

I could purchase a cloud backup plan. I can't purchase any Windows Server License.

Any suggestion is appreciated: Dropboxes, rsynch whatever could be included.

How can I automatically power off a server at 20.00pm and turn It On again at 8.00am in the morning? Is there any sw or hw tool that makò me able to schedule On/Off time?

The server could be anything Linux/Mac Os X/Windows.

EDIT: I mean something like this functionality of the fit-PC.

Can you tell me what I need to install?

Hello I'm trying to substitute citadel on my Virtual Private Server with something more simple. I dislike their documentation and the webmail client. I don't need any groupware feature. I need only an MTA with a nice looking web interface, SPAM and VIRUS check.

I recently found the lamson project from Zed Shaw. Is that production ready? Do you had any real and good experience with It? On the latest-news page I see that the last release dates december 2009.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, I'm really new to mail servers but I have to find a solution to manage sending and receiving mail on my VPS.

I would accept also to build my VPS email server using a linux system like exim, postfix or whatever but I have really small needs and they will not grow in at least a year and i will be the only one user. I'm searching for something that I could build and manage easily, as I'm a novice linux sysadmin. Having also some good documentation or at least a robust step by step guide would be a plus.

I got a design idea and I would like to have some advice from SF about It. I have 5 customers with small real-estate databases. I've built for them a desktop app and now they would like to merge their database to share their data. I don't want to centralize everything in one place nor I want to do maintenance for servers. They told me also, that all of them in their offices, have little servers and maintenance guys available. Although everything seems suitable for web application, I had the idea to experiment something new:

• Any customer small-server wild be connected to the others in a sort of mesh network without a single point of failure and through VPNs.
• If one of the servers went down the customers could still connect to their databases from one of the other mesh networked servers instead of from the local one that is down.
• During normal operations all the servers sync the db with the others through VPNs.
• I can accept a half-day timing window of NON synched data, in other words, since I don't need real time synchronization, the server don't have to always stay in synch.
• I can migrate my data over to other Non-Sql technologies like CouchDB or Redis or whatever you suggest.

As you can see I don't have a lot of constraints and although I could go with a web application I would like to delegate and decentralize support, data-privacy and management, as more as I can to my customers offices.

Is that a crazy idea? Do you know If something similar exist? Which technology would you suggest?
