I have inherited a bunch of old backup tapes that contain some data that needs to be recovered. The problem is that the amanda implementation used to create these backups has since been obliterated.
I am very new to amanda, but was under the impression that the config files are required to recover backed up data.
Is there any easy way to get this data off? If not, what steps should I take?
We currently have 4 squid proxy servers in no specific hierarchy. Some of which are experiencing intermittent DNS issues where we receive the following error:
"The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL."
However, if I point my browser to a different proxy server and reload the page, all is OK.
As a fallback for any future DNS issues I would like to configure squid's cache_peer setting to automatically query another proxy server if the hostname cannot be resolved locally.
I have attempted to configure cache_peer as below:
cache_peer 1.2.3.4 sibling 8080 0 no-query
cache_peer 1.2.4.4 sibling 8080 0 no-query
cache_peer 1.2.5.4 sibling 8080 0 no-query
After a squid -k reconfigure, my cache log shows:

When I browse to my troublesome URL, I get the same error, and this shows in the access.log:

Can anyone help me out with this? Not sure what I'm doing wrong here!
Looking to configure auto shutdown for my servers once the UPS battery reaches a certain state. We have MGE / EATON Pulsar M3000 UPS units, and a heap of servers running Ubuntu, FreeBSD and Solaris - oh and windows.
I am all very new to this, so I'm unsure if there is a standard program which I should be using. 'Nut' has been suggested. Has anyone had any experience with this?
Any other recommendations?

I have 3 x MGE Pulsar M 3000 2700w UPS units within my server room which have run perfectly up until now.
On Saturday morning I noticed that one of these UPS units was no longer outputting power, the lcd displayed a message saying "load not powered" and told me to press the power button to start output. Needless to say that the servers, switches and routers is was supporting were all turned off.
I tried pressing and even holding the power button, but the unit refused to start back up again. Only power cycling the unit got it back up again.
I have checked the logs on the UPS, although they were useless. Nothing out of the ordinary, and no email notifications had been sent. The output level sits on about 51% and all battery checks are OK.
It is now three days on and the UPS is still up and running (although I am scheduling an outage to get it out of there ASAP). Does anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong here? Is there anything else that I can check that could help?
I have a standalone Ubuntu 10.04 server (+ gnome) with a wireless 3G internet connection that is used to download data from an ftp server, process it, and then upload it again.
Remote administration is performed on the machine via ssh over a different port, with root logins disabled and an exclusive hosts.allow list for ssh only.
The data processed on this machine is somewhat sensitive.
My question is, what are the security concerns that I should address? Should I close down port 80 and other ports? As I also have to be mindful of internal users getting data out, is there a way to only allow ftp connections to the correct host? Should I disable access to usb ports etc? Should I be concerned about the 3G internet security?

After checking the status of one of my zpools today, I was faced with the following:

From what I can see, c6t9d0 has encountered 54 write errors. It seems as though it has automatically resilvered with the spare disk c6t36d0, which is now currently in use.
My question is, where exactly am I at? Yes the 'action' tells me to determine whether or not the disk needs replacing, but is this disk currently still in use? Can I replace / remove it?
Any explanation would be much appreciated as I'm quite new to this stuff :)
update: After following the advice from C10k Consulting, ie detaching:
zpool detach myPool c6t9d0
and adding as a spare:
zpool add myPool spare c6t9d0
It appears as though all is well. The new status of my zpool is:

On my Ubuntu server, I have several automounted zfs pools. The problem that I have, is that when I try to copy a file while preserving permissions, I get the following error:
cp: preserving permissions for `blah.txt': Operation not supported
Despite this, the file still duplicates, along with the original file attributes.
Can anyone help shed some light on this issue?
I am trying to add the mail.aliases map to my Makefile on my NIS/YP server. I have added 'mail' to list of maps to build, and ensured that it is pointing to the correct aliases file (/etc/aliases).
The problem I am getting is that when I run make, I get a "Callback timed out" error like the following:
mail.aliases -> "SlaveNisServer": Callback timed out
The other maps seem to build successfully.
Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong here?
As a bit of background, over the weekend the main air conditioning system for our server room went down. As I was out of town I was unable to stop in and check to make sure the auxiliary system was functioning properly. When I got to work this morning all the servers seem happy.
The question I have, is there any sort of temperature logging functionality that runs on unix based servers? I would love to know how the auxiliary aircon units went and keeping things cool! We have servers running Solaris, FreeBSD, Ubuntu (and if it helps Windows server 2003), however currently have no monitoring applications running. Thanks.
I was wondering if there is a way to update the 'Company' field for a large group of users within Active Directory? I would like to match all users with a company ending in a certain string.
It would take way too long to change this for each user individually.
