My system configuration script does an "apt-get install -y postfix". Unfortunately the script is halted when the postfix installer displays a configuration screen. Is there a method to force postfix to use the defaults during installation so that an automated script can continue to the end?
Does the postfix installer maybe check for existing configuration in /etc/postfix, and if it exists, not bother the user with the configuration screen?
I have a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 server installed within a VirtualBox VM instance. From the VirtualBox menu bar, I selected Devices: Install Guest Additions...
Then performed the following commands:
> sudo apt-get install -y build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
> sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/
> sudo /mnt/VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run
After some successful looking results, the following error is displayed:
Installing the Window System drivers ...fail!
(Could not find the X.Org or XFree86 Window System.)
After restarting, I was looking forward to some UI integration with my host desktop (resize window, not needing to press right-Ctrl to escape the client window, and having copy and paste functionality.
Is it possible to install the Guest Additions without the X Window overhead (I plan to only use for shell commands)? If additional packages are required, which ones?
I am tired of manually configuring instances of Ubuntu for testing web applications and for setting up workstations. I'm even more frustrated by the issues caused by inconsistent configurations.
Is there a method (hopefully not too time consuming to learn and setup) that allows for automation of the setup and configuration of an Ubuntu server or workstation from an ISO. This is primarily for virtual machine instances, but it would be helpful to also create instances on hardware.
I am specifically looking for a method to automate the installation of libraries (apt-get), configure services (such as Apache and MySQL), add 3rd party software (download, extract and build), and add libraries to scripting languages (for example, Ruby Gems or CPAN packages for Perl).
