We have a service to monitor our server farm by listening to the heartbeats, and send out email notifications if a server is not responding. When that happens one of us will ssh in and reboot the server.
I figured there must be some software tools to automate this manual reboots, preferably open source tools. If so, could you suggest some?
We need to use the BCP utility to port database (>1GB) to a remote database server across the internet. We can use the BCP utility to connect to the remote SQL Server, or we can copy over the BCP files across the internet into the "intranet" of the remote SQL Server, and then run the BCP utility from there.
Can someone comment on the feasibility, and performance differences?

I am able to use remote desktop on my Ubuntu server (with gnome desktop installed) when I also have an active session on the desktop. I would like to be able to remote desktop to this server after I just turn on the power (no screen and keyboard to the server), is that possible?

I have a business class internet connection and need to setup a static ip address for a machine. I did a search online and only find how to setup static local ip addresses (like 192.168..). I tried the same technique, and only setup the ip address and netmask, but after restart networking the computer could not connect to the outside world.
This is what I did:
1) edit /etc/network/interfaces iface eth0 inet static address 173.10.xxx.xx netmask 255.255.255.252
2) edit /etc/resolv.conf search wp.comcast.net nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx
3) restart network sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
Now the last step didn't report error, ifconfig shows the ip address was set, but this server cannot connect to outside world, ping google.com and reports "unknown host google.com".
Any ideas?
