I'm trying to trace a possible link problem on one of our servers' ethernet interfaces. ifconfig reports a large number of error packets. I've asked the hosting company to make some changes to the setup and would like to reset the interface counters to get a better idea if the situation has improved.

Restarting the machine is the obvious answer, but as this machine is the primary NAS, a maintenance window will be hard to acquire. Is it possible to reset the counters without a restart of the machine ?

Operating system is RedHat EL4, 32bit.

Our hosting company provides all the switching infrastructure for our servers. The private network, connected to eth2 should be GbE. Recently I've been suspecting that something is misconfigured as cacti graphs never appear to show more than 100mbit of traffic on the link.

Digging further I found that mii-tool and ethtool do not agree on the link speed.

I use puppet for managing our production servers. Under rhel5 the standard way of enabling ldap is to use the authconfig tool. Which works successfully, but isn't really capable with the puppet way of doing things. If I were to have puppet make the relevant edits to the authentication config files, which ones should I change ? Off the top of my head the files I know that need editing to enable ldap authentication are

/etc/ldap.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf

But there may also be pam config files which I am not suer about
