A user is trying to migrate a virtual machine from a datastore to another.
However during the migration wizard an error message prevents him from choosing the right operation:
The host is absolutely not in maintenance mode an I do not see this message when I repeat the same steps from my workstation.
We have different privileges.
I've got a file that notifies the puppet agent.
In the network module, the proxy settings are included in the .gemrc file like this:

I assume the code does something like /etc/init.d/puppet stop && /etc/init.d/puppet start
Since puppet is not running, it cannot start itself... it kind of makes sense.
How to make puppet restart itself when this file changes? Note that this file may not exist as well.
We have a services in a isolated network. These services need to authenticate users against the Active Directory server.
However the Active Directory server is not directly available so I have to setup a LDAP proxy in the isolated network. The LDAP proxy will then have access to the AD. Note that access must be read only and this proxy will have access to only one AD server.

From O'Reilly's book "TCP/IP Network Administration":
option ip-forwarding 0 | 1;Specifies if the client should do IP forwarding. 0 disables IP forwarding, and 1 enables it.
The only IP forwarding system I'm aware of is the one defined in /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward. From my point of view, this behavious requires some server capabilities.
I don't understand why a DHCP server should decide such things for a client. So I'm wondering if it's the same IP forwarding we're talking about here.
Is it the same "IP forwarding" system we're talking about here?

So I've got a apache module (which installs Apache) and I'm writing a monitoring module. This monitoring module will copy the needed files, only if the apache package is installed (or if the apache module is defined, or something like that). Same for the mysql package, etc.
Is the above design a good idea? What would be the best way for this kind of dependency?
I would like to be sure that the motd file is empty. I would love to do like this:
file { "/etc/motd":
ensure => empty
}
This obviously does not work.
Is there a simple way to ensure a file is empty instead using the "source" declaration and store an empty file in the file repository?
As a system administrator, I often have to modify programs for my company.
Example:
We're using an web interface to manage our local DNS.
After downloading and extracting the tar.gz file from the internet, I have to do some changes: I added a LDAP connector, changed some template files, adding some custom footer/header, added an additional table in the database, etc.
So many modification become hard to track.
Some more informations:
I'm using the vSphere client. When I create a new Virtual Machine I have a selection drop-down to choose the OS version. Except 32bit and 64bit version which I understand (because it's hardware related), I am wondering what difference does it make for VMware if I choose a specific version rather than another.
Example:
What difference does VMware if I choose RedHat 5 or RedHat 6? Does hardware look different? Is it just for information purpose? Why vmWare even has to know what operating system the guests are running on?
I've got a HP MSA2312i with 24 Hard drives. I created a RAID 50 virtual disk. That makes me a total of 11 TB of available space.
I want to create a 500GB volume (0.5 TB). When I want to create a volume, the web interface does not let me choose the size I want besides plain integer values between 1 and 11.
How do I select a more fine grained size than terabytes?
I have a group (group1) containing users.
In real life, this group is handled by two people (group1-leads).
I want group1-leads to be able to manage group1.
So I double-click on group1 navigate to the Managed By tab and change to group1-leads.
However when I click "OK", I get an error message telling me:
An object (User) with the following name cannot be found:
group1-leads... bla bla bla
How do I set a group in this field?
The autodiscover method used by Exchange looks great. However I do not have Exchange.
It looks like when setting up a mail account the device/mail client looks for a autodiscover.xml file.
Is there a way to create such a file by myself and serve it on a usual Linux server, pointing to a usual mail Linux server?
I'm trying to install a Windows XP server in a Xen environment. The OS is booting fine. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to set up the network settings.
Dom0 is a Debian Lenny currently hosting around 10 Linux virtual servers.
Windows tells me I have a "limited connection". It can't get any DHCP response, nor access other hosts in the network

The xm-network list command gave me an unusual output:

I've got a server with four Samsung hard drives. All drives are the same model and have been bought together. The drives are SAMSUNG HE753LJ with firmware 1AA01113.
I'm getting SMART errors but I have the feeling that smartctl does not understand the value he gets from the hard drive.
Here's the result of a SMART test:
