I'm starting as a new Google Workspace manager and prefer to manage configs, especially critical services used by the entire company, via source control for change management, revision control, and peer reviews.
Is there a way to manage Google Workspace with something like Terraform or even a checked in config file that I run against a CLI?
I was checking with a fellow sysadmin and debating whether it was better to bundle a large install, say Adobe CS5, into a single self extracting installer or leave it as a bunch of smaller files when distributing with SCCM.
My argument for bundling it into a single binary was to reduce file transfer overhead for each file where as he pointed out that a large file can be interrupted and will have to restart the entire download.
The question here becomes does SCCM handle partial downloads with BITS so that they can be interrupted or does it need to start at the beginning and does it transfer files as individual files or does it just transfer a bit stream transparently?
I have a Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Server as my KVM host.
Does it matter if my guest instances are x86 or x64 kernels if I plan to allocate less than 1gb of ram per instance? Also, does it matter if I use a different version of Ubuntu for my guests (10.10, 11.04)?
How can I share FolderA on ServerA so that my client can simply access it as ServerA:/FolderA if FolderA is not in / ?
Lets say FolderA is actually
/usr/local/test/RandomName
I can use bind in fstab to shorten it and put it in /export
/usr/local/test/RandomName /export/FolderA none bind 0 0
So now, I can mount it as
mount -t nfs ServerA:/export/FolderA /media/folderA
What I really want is
mount -t nfs ServerA:/FolderA /media/folderA
The server is Ubuntu 10.04 and the clients will include Macs and Linux machines
How does one properly approach having Ubuntu servers on a Xen hypervisor? I don't have any experience with RAID or Xen other than from a theoretical level.

I'm troubleshooting a friend's Windows 2k3 file server (that I had setup for them a few weeks ago). It got infected by a tenga.gen virus and he's trying to clean it now but doesn't have a server anti-virus on hand.
However, in the long run, would it be recommended to try to clean the server and get all traces of the virus off or just do a wipe and reinstall?
Normally, I would recommend the wipe and reinstall with a new virus scan from the start and slowly migrate verified cleaned files back onto it, but I moved out of the area and can't help in person.
I've configured an in-house server to use rsnapshot to backup our hosted RHEL servers but in order to do so, I'm using the root account on those servers so I have access to everything including restricted /etc files like /etc/shadow.
Is there a better way to do this?

We use a Windows PPTP VPN connection to get onto our network's VPN.
Is there a way I can write a batch script or export my settings to add this VPN connection to another person's computer. I also need to be able to set certain things like "Do not use default gateway" and add a WINS server.
I was wondering if there was a way to run Gnome (or XFCE) from either an X terminal thin client such as a netbook running only XWindows or even perhaps a Windows maching using Xming or X/Cygwin and have the Window manager and desktop hosted from an Linux server?
Also, could this host multiple Gnome/Xfce sessions simultaneousness?
From my limited experience, I have only run a window manager on the local machine (physical or virtual) in front of me. I can run applications from the remote machine but they use my local window manager.
A hypothetical situation would be a classroom where the professor wanted to demonstrate Linux but the room only has Windows and/or Mac computers. If the professor has a sufficiently powerful server, could all student experience the Gnome interface simultaneous using just a program like Xming to connect to the server?
I just set up Poptop on our Ubuntu 10.04 server so we could use it as a VPN.
I can connect to the LAN through PPTP but I can't use it a gateway (I needed to uncheck the "use default gateway on remote network" option on the Network Adapter properties in Windows.
We don't actually need (nor want) to to route all internet but there is certain stuff that is restricted to our office network's IP address such as SFTP access to hosted web servers.
Most of my settings is default except that I'm using the same subnet as our LAN. I've also enabled ip forwarding in sysctl.
How can I use it as default gateway?
On our Ubuntu 10.04 server, I've configured it to automount a 2nd hard drive to /mnt/wd15/ but now I can't unmount (using umount) it or find the entry in /etc/fstab.
How do I unmount it (or/and find out how its mounted)?

We want to set up a FTP Daemon on our Ubuntu 10.04 server that can use a simple (probably custom) built web interface for a FTP server using MySQL for authentication.
It'll be public facing but only intended for use by a few customers or clients.
I know vsftpd, ProFTPd, and Pure-FTPd but I'm not sure which is best for this application.

I have a poptp server running on a old Fedora server but I'm upgrading to an Ubuntu 10.04 server.
I was wondering if there are any good, reasonable secure alternatives to poptop that in can install on our new Ubuntu server as a way to get VPN access from Windows clients (XP and 7) to get remote access into our Intranet.
We only use the VPN to access files located inside the network; we do not need to use it as a proxy/gateway.
I've looked into OpenVPN but it seemed way too complicated and I would prefer something built into Windows. A Windows 7 only solution is OK.

Windows 7 has PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP, and IKEv2 built in and Windows XP has PPTP and L2TP/IPsec built in. Which of these can easily be served by an host on our Ubuntu server?
We have a handful of hosted servers running RHEL4 and RHEL5 and would like to backup some key folders (I'm thinking /var /srv and /etc) to a local server we have in house.
The local server is running Ubuntu 9.10 Server edition.
I'm looking for a free (preferably OSS) way to grab (or push) incremental backups to my local server and once a month or so, make a new snapshot for incremental updates in between snapshots.
Also, while I'm comfortable with using a command line, others may need to use the system in the future, and I would like some kind of graphical or web interface to browse the backup repository.

My web development experience has started with Fedora and RHEL but I'm transitioning to Ubuntu. In Fedora/RHEL, the default seems to be using the /var folder while Ubuntu uses /srv.
Is there any reason to use one over the other and where does the line split? (It confused me so much that until very recently, I thought /srv was /svr for server/service)

Hey, I know there's a bunch of wiki questions already but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good wiki thats good for use internally and can be access by some clients?
Must be free (F/OSS preferred), Ubuntu (9.10+) compatible, and have per-page permissions.
I setup MediaWiki and its fine for internal use but I don't know how, without some severe hackery, how to restrict a client to just view one page and all the images on it and css. It'll be worse when they ask to be able to modify it as well.

We have an internal document wiki running on MediaWiki (latest stable). Is there a way we can export a specific page for a customer without giving them access to the entire wiki (which is currently behind a PAM-based authentication).
Edit1: Sorry for the vagueness, I meant is there a way to syndicate a specific page so that they don't actually have access to the wiki but the content is still available and up-to-date. For example, the page I want them to see http://mysite.com/wiki/page_to_see Can I have it available at http://mysite.com/outsite_wiki
Say I have a protected directory called Corp that only members of the unix group Corp can access and its mostly working with:
read list = @corp
write list = @corp
create mask = 0770
Problem is, when a user creates a file there, its setting the user and group ownership to them, e.g. when user1 creates foo1, it has the permissions 770 for user1:user1 and user2 can't access or edit the file.
Is there a way to make it user1:corp from samba settings or should I change the create mask to 0777 (which I've enabled temporarily after doing a chgrp -R corp on the shared directory)?
Users have SSH access to the server so the folder /svr/corp itself needs to be restricted, right now its set to 770.
How and where do I put my mod_rewrite rules in the httpd configuration so that they're only parsed once at startup instead of each time a file in my web directory is read.
