I have a HP DL380 G5 with 8x146GB single port SAS SSF disks (DG146ABAB4).
A couple of them have failed and I can't find any new single port disks anymore. They all seem to be dual port. I'm wondering if I can mix the two disk types? Are dual port backwards compatible?
Are there any third-party companies that provide a single IP address which is load-balanced over two IP addresses owned by the end customer? We are based in the UK.
I need to provide a solution to my customers where they can have geographically dispersed high availability for IP traffic. Without requiring them to have the infrastructure and headaches of getting these BGP configurations implemented by the potentially differing ISPs.
This traffic is IP address based and DNS based failover isn't possible (before you ask ;).
I have a remote server which has an expired license. I can't currently add the new license because of a licensing server error so I need to reboot the machine.
My question is will I be able to remote desktop onto the machine and apply the new license or do I have to be physically at the server. I know an activation wizard usually appears and doesn't let you go any further but does this same wizard appear over remote desktop?
I don't really want to reboot the machine only for it to not come up again.
I want to write an init service script which runs the program as a particular user (and not root). I will then chkconfig this script and install into my production run level.
I could just put a su command in the script but I was wondering if there is a best practise of doing this.

Are there any tools other than the HP provided ones for monitoring component failures in these server from RHEL5?
Sometimes when deploying .NET code in IIS6 I can't rename or delete the .NET application folder because it's in use. The only thing that seems to fix it is stopping the w3svc service, doing what I need to do then starting it again.
This isn't ideal when there are other web applications being served on the web server. Just stopping that particular virtual web site doesn't seem to work either.
Is there a better way to do this?
I want to limit certain users on my system to a subset of commands and have absolutely no access to the rest of the system. I figure chrooting is the way to solve this but I only know how to chroot a ftp user. Can this be done for normal shell users and how can I achieve this?
