I have been using ZoneEdit to manage my DNS. This has been generally fine except I did have a half our outage where two of their DNS servers were down causing my site to be inaccessible. What is the best way to manage this? I have considered having an alternative domain, possibly with DNS managed by a different company, and some kind of failover that redirects.
Craig's questions
I have just registered a Windows 2008 VPS hosting account which I plan on running a couple of web sites on. In the past I have just used shared hosting in which everything is set up for me, so need a few pointers.
When I register a new domain it asks for a couple of name servers. How do I set this up on my server? Can I just give it the IP address of the VPS server? Do I have to register some web sites with ns1, ns2 host headers in IIS? It's all a bit confusing when never done before.
I have two web sites I plan on hosting. I configured both in IIS with a different IP address (the VPS plan has 2) but when trying to access the site via IP it always displays the default web site. If I turn off the default web site it just 404's. Is there any simple tutorials for setting up a couple of sites from scratch.
I am going to upgrade the shared hosting of my web site to a VPS mainly because my database is getting too big, > 200mb. The basic VPS plan on CrystalTech where I am hosting has 512mb ram, disk space shouldn't be an issue. If I install SQL Server 2008 Web Edition (which I have license) on here do you think it will slow the server down too much considering the amount of memory available? Has anyone experienced similar setup.
I have a pretty standard 4 port ASDL router. I am running out of ports so wondering if I can piggback the spare 4 port router I have or if I need to purchase a new 8/16 port router. If it can be done, how is it done (I am sure it is simple, but so am I).
I have just bought a Belkin Flip 2 port KVM. Functionally it is almost there except I have a keyboard sticking problem. So if I type the word 'Hello' it will often (about 25% of the time) output 'Hellooooooooooooooooooooo'. If I plug the keyboard directly into the USB on the computer I don't have this problem, only when plugged into the KVM. I feel like it is a USB speed problem.
Followup It appears I have the same problem with the mouse, it will jump from one side of the screen to the other as I move it. The mouse is annoying but half as much as the keyboard.
