I have a server I would like to use explicitly for running virtual machines under Ubuntu Server 12.04. It has plenty of RAM, 64GB and three large identical HDD´s. I would like redundancy through software.
How would you recommend I set it up storage?

During partitioning I created a software RAID 5 volume spanning three identical disks. On that volume I created an encrypted volume, which I created an LVM inside containing two logical volumes inside a volume group. One logical volume for /boot and one for / (the rest):
When it is time to install Grub to the MBR I get the error Executing grub-install /dev/sda failed. This is a fatal error:
After that I completed the installation without installing a boot loader.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out!
- I do want redundancy for
/bootso placing it outside the RAID 5 volume is not an option. - I have tried placing a
/bootpartition immediately inside the RAID 5 volume and that doesn´t work automatically either. - If it is possible I´d like the
/bootinside the LVM, but if it is not having it inside the RAID volume would be sufficient. - I know that a software RAID is sub optimal for performance and that a hardware one is preferred. However, my budget does not allow for one and redundancy and encryption are my primary concerns.
I have bought a new server where I use the motherboard ASUS P9X79 WS X79 S-2011 ATX. It will be used for virtualization, preferably using VMware vSphere Hypervisor™ (ESXi) if I can get the RAID on my motherboard working with VMWare (it does not detect it).
The motherboard has the Intel® X79 chipset, which for RAID controller means vendor ID 8086 (Intel) and model ID 2826.
When I boot the ESXi 5.0.0 installation media from my flash drive I can not see drives in the RAID5 set I created.
Questions:
Is there a VIB file for the RAID controller I can use?
I have found one article at http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-033313.htm on getting RAID to work with some Intel controllers, it lists 9 integrated RAID modules it is comptabile with. However, there is no mention of the X79 chipset.
I use Ubuntu Server 10.04. I more or less only want the server to be accessible over SSH after a reboot. I will then login and mount the encrypted partition myself, after which I start the services which uses it.
How would I go about setting something like that up?
(My first idea was to have everything except /boot in an encrypted LVM, but I never got logging in through SSH and mounting the LVM to work. Initramfs was a bit too complicated for me. Otherwise I think this would have been the best solution.)
I installed Ubuntu Server 10.04. The console is one row too far up. I can't see the first line (the _ cursor is the only thing I can see from that line as it's too high up) and there is room for one more line at the bottom of the screen.
Is there a fix for this? It's a wide screen monitor, as most monitors there days.
I'm trying to learn how the initramfs works and how it may be configured. I would like curl to be added to the packages available in the initramfs, and run a script which uses curl during boot (which means the network has to be set up, before it).
How should I do it? (I need it to work when upgrading my kernel too.)
On a Windows Server 2008 Standard-server I have two partitons, named C: and P:.
I would like to move the user profiles directory C:\Users to P:\Users
Is it possible? Is it supported by Microsoft? Could this result in any problems when upgrading etc? Has anyone here done anything similar?
A server allows SSH connections, but not using public key authentication. It's not within my power to change this at the moment (due to technical difficulties, not organizational) but I will get on it as soon as possible!
What I need now is to execute commands on the server using plain old account+password authentication from a script. That is, I need to do it in a non-interactive way. Is it possible? And how do I do it?
The client which will be executing the script runs Ubuntu Server 8.04. The server runs Cygwin and OpenSSH.
We have installed Cygwin on a Windows Server 2008 Standard server and it working pretty well. Unfortunately we still have a big problem. We want to connect using a public key through SSH which doesn't work. It always falls back to using password login.
We have appended our public key to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server and we have our private and public key in ~/.ssh/id_dsa respective ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub on the client.
When debugging the SSH login session we see that the key is offered by the server apparently rejects it by some unknown reason.

I want to have one Ubuntu Server containing virtual machines who are also running Ubuntu Server. I want to use the GPL version of VirtualBox for this and I have some questions:
- Is it important that I run linux-virtual for a kernel adapted for running as virtual?
- I want the guest OS's to use a virtual network interface which gets its address from my DHCP-server just as a normal computer would. Is it hard to set that up? How do I do it?
- I do not want to run the GUI for VirtualBox, I want to use the command line as the server hasn't got X installed. Does this make it much harder for me?
I want to connect another hard disk to my computer, which I want to sleep 99% of the time. I will only use it for a few things, but I need it to be mounted at all times.
To achieve this I would like to know:
- How do I log which processes accesses a device? I need the logging to be able to tell what is causing the hard disk to wake up if it does, so I may act on it.
- Are there any special kernel settings I need to make so that the device may sleep longer?
- How do I set the sleep intervals of the hard disk?
I know about SysPrep for Windows, which should be used after installing a Windows image on a computer to make that computer unique on the network.
Are there any similar steps I should take if I'm using Linux? I have a lot of computers to install it on (identical hardware) and I would like to do it properly. Is there a guide somewhere or could someone tell me what to do?
There are lots of different storage media. To name a few:
- DVD's
- CD's
- Normal hard drives
- SSD hard drives
- USB flash sticks
Let's say that I have saved some files to a certain media. How would I calculate the probability that the media/device will break within X time units and I'll be unable to access the contents?
Are there any good sources which provide such statistics and formulas for different devices and media types?
I want numbers and formulas if possible. Going with "Use a son, father and grandfather type backup scheme where the grandfather is duplicated and stored in two different secure locations" might be fine advice indeed. But I want to be able to calculate the probability that a device/media fails, based on some real world statistics.
I want one application to use a VPN connection while others do not.
I'm using Xubuntu (thus XFCE) but I'd like a command line / static configuration solution if it's possible.
Is it possible to accomplish it, and if so how?

I have SSMTP installed and working, I send my mail from my Google-account. The fact that SSMTP can only send mail using one account isn't a problem for me. It's just a home server and the users I have do not have the ability to add cron-jobs.
I would like to know how the mailing from scripts usually works in Linux/Unix in general and in Ubuntu specifically. I would also like to know of a good way for me to get mails in the two situations above.
I'm interested in installing etckeeper with Mercurial in my Ubuntu system. My reason is that I don't know how to use Git and don't want to learn at the moment. If I check the package description it sounds promising:

Main goals is to have/being:
- Windows XP
- Main Linux installation
- "Some other" Linux installation which I am currently experimenting with.
- All three OS installations completely separate (at least to begin with). I won't share
/homebetween my Linux installations, as it might be that some applications I'm using are of different versions and thus have different config files in my$HOME. - Able to wipe the current Windows XP installation and install a previous image of it later on, to enjoy a fresh Windows system.
- Able to change my experiment Linux installation into some other distribution.
- Creating a sensible partitioning scheme for this which fits my 120.0 GB hard drive. Appended info: It's for a laptop with a relatively weak CPU and no hardware viritualization support, so adding a HDD isn't an option nor is running a full fledged OS in a VM.
Why:
- I've not used Windows for maybe 10 months. I'm not about to start using it extensivly, but it might come in handy from time to time if I need to run some Windows only software.
- My main Linux installation is Ubuntu, which I do like a lot. At the same time I do feel that some things could be improved (it contains an exceptionally old version of Awesome in it's latest LTS offering and I tend to think that a rolling release system would be more convenient to use). Due to this I would like to explore the other distributions which are out there...
- My experiment Linux installation should just be for testing things out. I would like to try a couple of different distributions (my first is Arch Linux) and try to configure them. It's mostly for playing around and experimenting. If I find something I like it might replace my main Linux installation later on.
Questions and thoughts:
- How would you suggest I partition my hard drive? My idea is having Windows XP and my experimental Linux installation on one partition each. And maybe spread out my main Linux installation over multiple partitions if there is a benefit to it. Will all Linux distributions be happy to live in a single partition?
- Do you see any problem in writing over my current Windows XP with an older image later on? I guess it shouldn't mess up the partitioning table or the MBR, but I'd like a second opinion.
- What about the installation of different distributions on the experimental part of my hard drive? (The part I saved for experimental installs of Linux.) Any problems you foresee?
- I was thinking of using Clonezilla for the imaging. I need to image individual partitions as that's what I need to restore as well. I'm sending/receiving the images from my home server, so they need not be stored on the 120 GB hard disk. Any comments on this? Will I have to make a note of the partitioning scheme on paper in case the partition table accidentally should be damaged to be able to restore the partitions?
- What else should I think about when planning this setup?
Ideally I would like something which:
- Allowed me to write a reason for installation of a package or a set of packages.
- Kept track of all changes the installed package made to my system. I would like to see /etc file modifications, user and group changes and file changes overall. And anything important I forgot. :-)
- Allowed me to write a reason for removing a package or a set of packages.
- Allowed me to modify the reasons I gave at a later time. I might have installed a package to begin with just because I wanted to check it out. Then I might find it really useful and have a good reason for keeping it. As the reasons are for documentation and not a diary I'd like to change the original reason "Just testing it out" into "Installed as it offers services x,y,z using a minimal and fast implementation".
- Allowed me to (manually) include the manual steps I needed to perform. Like change that files' contents, and that ones permissions, remove that file & create that file. Basically log commands I perform together with some documentation comments. And tie them to the packages I installed/removed which caused these manual steps to be necessary.
- I could get output from which basically is a description of how to duplicate my system on a freshly installed machine. This means that only the installed/removed packages that differs from the fresh install are shown with their descriptions (still in sequental order as packages may depend upon each other).
Questions
- Does it sound like a good system for documentation? Why? Why not? What can be improved?
- Is there something like this out there already?
