can the cache pool have different name than the zpool?
eg: suppose there is a zpool "tank" serving NFS and iSCSI
can a new cache pool be added as "xyz1" for it to be serving the "tank"?
or is there a per pool cache concept?

choosen a Dell powerconnect 8024 10GbE switch. per the spec sheet this has 10GbaseT ports.

the HBA on my storage server has 10G CX4 copper ports
Dell does not sell any cables and this adds to my confusion.
from the picture Dell 8024 seems to have RJ-45 type ports on the front panel? my question: is it a RJ-45 + CX4 cable or CX4 + CX4 cable?

when a server has more than 8 cores per CPU (total 16 logical procs) and ESX standard license is applied, what does it mean for VM performance? Since each VM on host is allowed only 4 vCPUs max
VMWare ESX/ESXi limits the no of vCPUs per guest VM depending on the license:
standard Lic = 4 vCPU Advanced Lic = >4 since i dont know exact number
is there need to upgrade to Advanced version for any perf benefits if none of VMs have workloads that need more than 4 vCPUs?
Have dedicated partition for each OS. But W2K8 creates a "system partition" which gets overwritten during subsequent windows 2003 install.

looking for recommendations on ESX4 OS - VMFS version3:
RAID-5 : matching the stripe size with VMFS block size? (64K, 128K etc)
RAID controller options: "adaptive read ahead, write-back" on PERC 6i
i have read that smaller stipes are good for writes and larger for reads. Since this is virtual env, not sure whats good.
what impact if any has aligning VMFS & data disks in Virtual machines? Appreciate your comments.

giving up older question:have seen on vmware forums that its not possible have a USB drive NTFS attached to ESXi4 host. fdisk -l shows the device as /dev/mpx.... but when i try to mount that using mount /dev/xxx /mnt/usbdisk....it fails with message "no such file or dir"
could anyone help with correct entry in etc/fstab?

eight 300GB SAS drives are available. Can ESX be put on one disk as RAID-0 and others as RAID-5 ? so that in the event of disk failure data (VMs) are safe. if os disk RAID-0 fails could that be installed on replacement disk and still be able to keep VMs running?
if not RAID-1 for OS is only option for OS disk? please suggest any other RAID options.
All: many thanks for your responses. the question that remains is which RAID? my situation:
- at max handle 1 disk failure
- be more storage efficient (less disk cost)
- better I/O write perf
- if esxi 4 can handle locking better (Chopper) then why not RAID-6 or 5 for all 8 disks instead of separating OS and data volumes? does this provide ability replace failed disk and continue since OS is now mixed up with data?
- How good is RAID-50? is it better than RAID-5?
Dell PE2970 with AMD Opteron 6core 2431 2.4GHz + 64GB 667Mhz RAM - 2435 is not available with Dell now
Dell R905 with AMD Opteron 8435 2.6 GHz + 64GB 800Mhz RAM - but this CPU is 4-8 way, I have chosen only 2P config
Both are very close on price and I am leaning towards the R905, please advise.
