I'm trying to understand the (more than) various EC2 options at Amazon AWS.

In the documentation, they describe what each utilization type is best suited for, along with what hardware the instance will run on (small, large, extra large).

What I want to know is what is the technical difference between the different utilization types? What am I really buying?

After trying several solutions I just can't seem to get this to work.

I owned a .org and had urls like

http://mydomain.org/view/3242343
http://mydomain.org/login
http://mydomain.org/page/5

and I now have the .com and want all of them to be taken right to their .com equivalents:

http://mydomain.com/view/3242343
http://mydomain.com/login
http://mydomain.com/page/5

etc.

The rules I've tried so far seem to take any URL from .org and just send them to the root of mydomain.com.

What htaccess rule do I need?

Im trying to transfer a file from a Windows 7 host running VMWare Server to a Windows 2003 server VM, and it's painfully slow.

I've tried adding/adjusting registry keys and settings found on KB articles, and still nothing.

Ive tried this:

Vmware tools are installed.

Any ideas?

I'm looking to remote into my windows 7 machine (looking to connect to terminal services, not just at a command prompt) from outside my LAN but I currently do not have access to my routers admin page to configure any sort of port forwarding or rules.

Does anyone know if/how I can accomplish this?

Edit: I'm looking for a free solution to do this, if possible.

Just moved to shared hosting on GoDaddy and Im trying to get my .htaccess rules working.

Heres what I have:

All the pages @ the root of the domain seem to be working i.e mydomain.org/faq, mydomain.org/about are working.

But whenever I try mydomain.org/category/somecategory, I get a 404. How can I fix my .htaccess to obey these rules that are more than 1 level deep?

EDIT: I have fixed the rules by changing them to the following:

Can anyone confirm/deny that this is the proper way to fix this?

I am interested in purchasing a .ca domain name. It was taken, and when I did a WHOIS it showed me that GoDaddy (a registrar) has control of it, however when I go to GoDaddy to purchase it, I have no such option.

I have always wondered - why do registrars do this? I've come across this situation before with other domains as well.
Is there any way to actually purchase a domain like this for yourself?

If anyone can shed some light on this issue, I'd greatly appreciate it.

After a few discussions (here, here, and here), I am still unable to create a simple VM that will be used as a fileserver hosted on my Hyper-V box. I have created a fixed 700GB SCSI drive (.vhd file), as I have learned an IDE drive of this size is not possible. Not to sound too cynical, but its blown me away at how much trouble its been to create a large amount of space and start using it.

What is the best way to create a fileserver with a drive of this size hosted on Hyper-V Server 2008, and how can I get it going???

Inclusion of OS, driver, integration tools etc, anything you feel is required would be greatly appreciated.

Extra information

  • I am using the stand-alone version of Hyper-V server, and not Windows Server 2008.
  • I have tried loading the Linux Integration Tools (linked in the comments of the last link above) onto a SUSE 11 VM and the installation fails, the machine cannot see the vhd at all.

After posting this question, and creating a fixed 700GB disk in Hyper-V, when I mount Fedora 11 to a CD and go to install it only shows 127GB of space to write to.

How can I use all 700GB on the VHD?????

EDIT: In response to Cristians answer, I have made a SCSI controller, pointed it at the 700GB VHD and booted, now Fedora doesnt see any drive at all:

What am I doing wrong here???



EDIT 2: If I cannot make an IDE drive thats > 127GB, and I cant boot on the 700GB SCSI, how can I use this space??? If I boot on a small IDE with the SCSI attached, Fedora has no idea that all that space is there. Will this appear after loading the operating system? How hard is it to format a large drive and use it in Hyper-V???

Hey everyone, after posting another question here, it seems I have to create a fixed disk in order to get one 700GB.

I have shut down the machine (which basically has nothing on it), and gone to convert to a fixed disk. It is going EXTREMELY slow - if my calculations are correct at the rate its going it will take ~2 days to complete. Its been going for about 6 hours and its about 10% complete. I'd like to continue setting up my server and start using all of the space.

Is this normal? How can I speed this up???

Any ideas? How can I tell fedora to use 700GB, and do I have reformat to do this?

I am running Windows 7 ultimate and im trying to manage VM's on my Hyper-V server via the MMC. I can connect to the machine, but I get the "You do not have the required permissions to complete this task. Please contact..." message.

I have used the HVRemote script and ran all of the required commands on another Windows 7 machine on my network and it worked perfect, I do the same on my machine and I get the permissions error.

For now I have disabled the firewall on my machine and the server, and still nothing. Ive rebooted both machines.

How can I adjust the permissions here? Any ideas on why the other Windows 7 machine works flawless and Im getting the error?

I am planning on moving to Citrix XenServer to host a couple of VM's and am looking to find out if Fedora is in fact supported. The site says it can run Red Hat, but aren't this and Fedora nearly the same?

Can I run this OS in a virtual machine on this hypervisor? What alternative OS's are there to do this?

EDIT: I just looked and Fedora isnt listed for ESXi either, just Red Hat Linux. Will it run on here either?

Apparently from the Citrix forums someone has built Fedora on XenServer 4.1, so I guess there would be no reason it wouldn't work on 5.5?

Is there any way to identify the speed of your memory through software? I am on Fedora 9 and looking to find out the speed of the DIMM's I have in there currently.

I have tried a 'lshw' but it doesnt display the speed. I know the motherboard supports 3 different speeds, but I dont know whats in there and dont want to turn off the box.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I have found the ram to be '30 ns' according to dmidecode. How can it be 33 MHz if the board only supports 400, 533, 667 Mhz RAM?

EDIT 2: Are there any other tools to do this?


EDIT 3: I actually surrendered and ended up powering down for a few minutes and opening up the case. It turned out to be 667 MhZ - this model: http://www.directron.com/rm12864aa667.html. Despite not being able to actually figure out it was 667 through software, I have marked HD's answer as the correct one as that seems to be the best tool for the job.

I am trying to setup some VM's on Citrix XenServer but can't enable Hardware Virtualization support. In the XenServer install it prompted me to enable this, and upon creating a VM I got a "HVM required" error.

I have a dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ processor - does this have support for AMD-V?

How can I enable this to run this software/VM's?

If it helps I am running:

  • a Mach Speed MSNV-939 motherboard with 3 gigs of RAM.
  • Pheonix Technologies 6.0 BIOS

Edit: It looks like the chip can do it, but not with the 939 socket, I need the AM2 socket. Can anyone confirm this?
