Hyper V Generation 2 VMs seem to exhibit this behavior:

• after expanding VHD, new space appears as separate partition
• there is no way to combine it with existing c:/ partition from Windows
• have to use something like GParted, to move partitions around to actually increase c:/

Maybe deleting Recovery Partition could be an option.

Question: How to handle this without having to use a tool like GParted?

Hyper-V has two folders 'Virtual Hard Disks' and 'Virtual Machines', the first stores the virtual disks themselves and the latter stores settings, snapshots, etc.

Is there's benefit of storing these two folders on separate SSD drives to:

1. Increase performance - reduce chances of disk related IO bottleneck

2. Increasing individual SSD life longevity - 'Virtual Machines' folder stores .VMRS files which are equal to the amount of configured RAM on the guest OS, so this folder should get hit harder with disk writes on RAM intensive guest OSs and degrade the SSD faster.

Having an issue where my network adapter is constantly showing relatively high Receive traffic when system is completely idle.

This happens after Hyper-V creates an external Virtual Switch.

Is this normal? Any way to fix this?

Environment & additional details:

• Windows Server 2019, latest SP/update as of now
• Mellanox ConnectX-2 10GBE Network Adapter, single port, no NIC teaming
• Receive traffic always hovers ~17Mbps, if Virtual Switch is removed it goes to 0Mbps
• I experienced an identical issue with this NIC model on Unraid OS, issue was fixed by disabling both Bridging and Bonding network settings (not related to virtual switch)
• Issue is reproducible on other machines with same hardware

I'm facing a weird problem with Generation 2 Hyper-V VM, where I'm unable to extend partition in Guest OS.

Once I edit the VHDX & Expand it using Hyper-V Manager on the Host OS, and boot into Guest OS, I navigate to Disk Management to extend existing C:/ partition and see "Extend Partition" is grayed out because there is a 100 MB UEFI partition between C:/ and un-allocated space I just provisioned.

The only way to extend that I found was to use a paid partition tool like EaseUS or AOMEI, I'm unable to install their free versions as this is a Windows Server OS and they require Server editions of their software which are paid.

I tried using GParted Live CD, but it does not see to allow extending if partition is not adjacent.

How can I extend existing partition in Guest OS?

So I know that identical RAM from different sets / kits may cause system instability. I'm talking about RAM with identical brand & serial numbers but with a different batch number (usually a 4 digit number).

I've had first hand experience with this issue with regular non ECC RAM - but my question is if that's true for ECC Registered RAM?

I'm looking at RAM on eBay, and one of the sellers is telling me that mixing identical sets this is not a problem with ECC Registered RAM - so just want to clarify it.

Also, not sure if AMD vs. Intel platform makes a difference in this case, but I'd be using this with AMD.

The way I understand it is, that I can create unlimited guest virtual machines without additional keys.

Is my understanding correct?

If not, please explain.

If yes, how do I go about creating guest virtual machines from the host's license?

This is not a general licensing question, more specifically regarding guest OS activation.
