I have a number of Windows XP boxes left in my orgamization from a former system administrator. So I have no administrator passwords. How do I get administrator access to these boxes without reinstalling Windows?
P.S.: There's a neat solution "chroot with live cd" for linux, maybe there's something similar for Windows XP?
I have a disk partition that is mapped to a separate volume which is listed as
/dev/sda3/ /media/DATA fuseblk ...
in gnome-system-monitor when mounted. However when I start Ubuntu it is not mounted and cd /media/DATA fails. I usually need to firtst access the drive through Nautilus. How do I make it availabale on startup?

Why does curl receive an expired cookie?
In a response to some url the server is sending a 302 Found response and a cookie. In Firefox this cookie gets set seamlessly. Firebug says:

However when curl requests the same url, the cookie is expired, curl's output:

What are privilege differences between sudo and sudo -i?
With sudo it's
$sudo echo "search foo.bar.baz" >> /etc/resolv.conf
bash: /etc/resolv.conf: Permission denied
...and with sudo -i
$sudo -i
#echo "search foo.bar.baz" >> /etc/resolv.conf
...it works. The privileges are:

I was a surprise that these commands have different behavior, what causes the just sudo version to fail?
How to find out what process is using CPU to what extent in Ubuntu? I'd like to have real-time data as well as recorded history. Both console and GUI apps would be great.
The situation is that my system seems to be really overloaded right now and I don't know why for sure. I've spent some time killing processes and watching if performance improves. And I suspect that JS Scripts running in Mozilla are causing problems. All in all a nice tool for taking a look at CPU usage would come in handy.

I'm planning to set up a service that would allow people to connect their ip-cameras to and watch video embedded into a website. Scheduled saving and replaying would also be available. What hardware and software would you recommend for that?
I'm thinking of using Wowza Media Server.
In particular I have two questions:
What video protocol/format should be used between cameras and the streaming server? What advantages over standard MPEG does H.264 have?
What format should be utilized to allow for multicast streaming between the streaming server and the webserver/user?

We were choosing between Panasonic BL-C101, whose specs say it supports "Image compression: JPEG (Motion JPEG), MPEG-4" (I guess it's MPEG-4 unless they don't mention H.264 explicitly) and a H.264 supporting camera Axis M1011. As Wowza needs H.264 we go for Axis. We are going to save snapshots every 0.5 seconds (which is probably ideal for surveillance cameras) and a) record it and broadcast it later on demand b) broadcast it live via unicast or multicast. ffmpeg would cut, save video to disk and, possibly, stream it live. I'm slightly confused here... What would be the role of Wowza Media server then?
What do you think would be the advantage of using multicast over Internet (and should it be used)?

I'm probably looking for a way to buffer a file at the beginning of a pipe, which in contrast to this:

... would preserve the input data from destruction by the pipe itself. Is there such a buffer in stock?
Can I make unzip or any similar programs work on the standard output? The situation is I'm downloading a zip file, which is supposed to be unzipped on the fly.

UPD: I have a couple of servers running on one box. Most of them are in deployment mode. However one is in development. All servers are Pythonic and the disease is that all the servers are listed as python in ps, which makes it impossible to killall the one in development leaving others intact.
UPD: As David and GNUix suggested I created symlinks to Python interpreter and bash scripts for each server.
How to tune Ubuntu to automatically deactivate a touchpad on mouse connect and activate on its disconnect?
I'm trying to run Python scripts with a shebang on Ubuntu. When I create a python script
#! /usr/bin/env python
import sys
... and run it I get a shell error:

: No such file or directory
How can I make it work?
Solution: Remove '\r's from line endings with dos2unix.
