Perhaps I am totally over thinking this but I have a domain name and name servers that are working just fine. I want to transfer the one domain name that I have for my server which is also the name of the nameserver.

e.g.

mydomain.com

with nameservers

ns1.mydomain.com ns2.mydomain.com

I am transfering the mydomain.com from the current registrar to the one I use for all my other domains. The question is what do I have to update? Once the transfer is complete mydomain.com will have ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com as it's nameservers as it is today. I was wondering though how ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com are resolving if mydomain.com is pointing to ns1 and ns2. Am I over thinking this or am I missing something in the process here? I always just enter the nameserver names when I configure any domains on my server. Do I have to setup A records somewhere for ns1 and ns2 ?

I have Nagios installed and I'm working on getting the network map correct. The problem I have is that "Nagios" appears to be in the "internet" when it should be located on the MechNAS server.

What I want is Nagios Process to show up inside the local network. So it should show up at the same layer as MechNAS and development. Where exactly is that configured? I didnt see any place to set that up and it looks now like it's out there on it's own. Documentation and Googling didnt seem to turn up anything either.

I have a very odd problem with Nagios. For some reason the check_apt seems to be failing and I dont know why. It acts like it's not running the check at all.

I have nrpe running on the box development and all other checks are running fine. On the box with nagios installed the definition is as follows.

define service{
    use                             generic-service         
    host_name                       development
    service_description             APT
    check_command                   check_nrpe!check_apt
    }

On "development" the nrpe.cfg contains the following line.

command[check_apt]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_apt -n

Furthermore if I am on the box with Nagios installed and I execute the following it works!

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H development -c check_apt

which returns

APT OK: 0 packages available for upgrade (0 critical updates).

So, what is wrong here? It would seem that other NRPE plugins are working fine, only APT seems to fail and running it manually on the box seems to work. Suggestions?

I have an odd problem. I'm trying to install nagios NRPE but it keeps failing with

nagios-plugins-1.4.15-2.el5.rf.i386 from rpmforge has depsolving problems
  --> Missing Dependency: perl(Net::SNMP) is needed by package nagios-plugins-1.4.15-2.el5.rf.i386 (rpmforge)

The package 1:net-snmp-perl-5.3.2.2-9.el5_5.1.i386 is already installed and latest version.

Thoughts?

The environment is Centos 5.5 with Cpanel 11 installed.

Does anyone know of a way to monitor the load & resource usage of a single program. What I have is a process I'd like to know how much load it puts on the server but it's not something I can just "monitor" to get a feel for.

What I'd like to do is something like

$ monitor "someapp" &

and let it run, then review some sort of log. Is there any Red Hat package or downloadable program that can more or less monitor an entire processes load & resource usages??

What am I missing here, this seems so simple yet I cant get it to work.

Doesnt, work. Centos linux. Makes no sense to me why this isnt working.

I am running into a scenario where I'm seeing a high server load (sometimes upwards of 20 or 30) and a very low CPU usage (98% idle). I'm wondering if these wait states are coming as part of an NFS filesystem connection. Here is what I see in VMStat

From what I can tell when the IO goes up the waits go up. Could NFS be the cause here or should I be worried about something else? This is a VPS box on a fiber channel SAN. I'd think the bottleneck wouldn't be the SAN. Comments?

I want to force NFS to use a specific port I've opened on my firewall. It seems to randomly pick the UDP port, the TCP port is static. How do I lock in the UDP port so i'm not opening a range of ports?

I see a lot of info on setting up NFS but cant seem to narrow in on how to force a specific port.

I currently have an NFS mounted

website.com:/var/sites/backups0   /mnt/backup nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr

The problem is, this mounts 777 permissions and I want it to be 700, the directory is set to 700.

dmask and dir_mode both are invalid options, the man page didnt say anything about mode permissions either. How do I lock this down to 700 root access only?

Is there a way to change the screen resolution of the console after the system has been booted? I've seen plenty on setting the vga= line in the boot and in the grub config but I'd like to be able to change it after I login instead. This would be logging into the console, not through SSH.

in the old days of DOS I would have just used "mode" and changed it. What's the unix counterpart?

I'm currently running a host with 5.0 installed and wanted to upgrade to 5.1. Is there any real issues or concerns I should have in doing this? I run 5.1 on my dev server without any issues but I do host some accounts for a couple of resellers. Would there be any logical reason not to upgrade to 5.1? Perhaps some incompatbilities with a "major" open source package like Wordpress, Wordpress MU, Drupal, Joomla, osCommerce, etc.? From what it looks like in WHM it's mostly some added features. Any security holes in 5.1 to be concerned about?

I'd prefer to upgrade to 5.1 to be current but when 5.0 was installed as the default it raised the question.

If I login with the root password on my box I can simply type

mysqldump --all-databases and I will get th expected "Dump".

I setup a job in cron.daily to run and dump this to a backup drive. The problem I have is that although the user is running as root I get the following message

mysqldump: Got error: 1045: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

when trying to connect. I do not want to hard code the mysql database root password in the script (who would).

Considering that I can just type "mysqldump" at the command line in my bash shell there must be someway to get around using the -u parameter.I already have #!/bin/bash at the top of the script.

What am I missing here to get this to not ask for the root password to the database?
