I recently setup a new server for use with SQL. When I tried to connect via SSMS remotely, it failed. When I pinged it, it is pinging localhost, what is going on here? Please let me know if more details will help. It is Windows Server 2008.

I am archiving files into self-extracting .exe files. I want the user to have to copy the .exe to their machine in order to execute (extract) the files. So I want to deny only execute permission. They should still be able to write new files, and traverse folders. Possible?

I have a file share, and I want a process which enumerates files on that share and automatically creates a 7z self-extracting exe of files over 1 month old. On a different share, I want to create a 7z self-extracting exe of directories that are over 1 month old. Any idea if there is a program which can do this? I already have

7z a -t7z -mx9 -sfx filename.exe filename.txt 

Portion of it, just need more of the auto-management portion.

Running on Windows Server 2008, yes, PowerShell is available. Cygwin would not be an option.

We are having an issue with our Catalyst 6500 switch where we suspect that the ARP cache is being corrupted. This presents itself with the following symptoms:

1. When you attempt to ping a system which has not been resolved before, the first ping response times out, and each proceeding one succeeds: Pinging foo.network.com [xxx.xx.xx.xx] with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Reply from xxx.xx.xx.xx: bytes=32 time=5ms TTL=55 Reply from xxx.xx.xx.xx: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=55 Reply from xxx.xx.xx.xx: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=55

2. When the corruption issues occurs, every other ping times out: Pinging foo.network.com [xxx.xx.xx.xx] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from xxx.xx.xx.xx: bytes=32 time=5ms TTL=55 Request timed out. Reply from xxx.xx.xx.xx: bytes=32 time=5ms TTL=55 Request timed out.

3. Clearing the ARP cache temporarily resolves the issue. To clear the ARP cache we use the commands: clear arp cache clear ip cache This fixes it, but it is sure to happen again.

CLARIFICATION: We have the network that we manage, and then we are plugged into the corporate network. All requests to machines inside of the network that we manage work fine. We are only having problems with machines on the other network.

I've seen a few guides out there, but I could not get any of them to work. I can point NS records to my domain, so it sounds like I should be able to do this. I tried setting up a DMZ for the server portion, no luck at all.
