I'm adding a Synology DS 1513+ NAS to a small business network. The NAS has four ethernet ports for data transfer.

The current network configuration has a modem in bridge mode, hooked up to a consumer grade wireless router, hooked up in turn to a 16-port switch. Some additional machines are hooked up directly to the router and bypass the switch.

Is there any reason to split those ethernet cables across the devices? That is, will I get better performance with all of the cables going from the NAS to the switch, or would it be better to have two go to the switch and two go to the router?

How do you configure the command line version of PHP to have different settings on a Redhat system?

On Debian based systems, php has a separate command-line version config file: /etc/php5/cli.

On Redhat, there's /etc/php.ini and various additional ini files in /etc/php.d/ but no separate config file for the command line version, even though the php-cli package is installed.

I currently have nginx proxying for Thin, but set up to serve static files for the app that Thin is serving instead of proxying the request.

What I'd like to know is how I can check that the rules are set up correctly. Since Thin doesn't log requests, I would need to set up nginx logs in such a way that it shows which requests were served as files and which were passed to Thin. Is this even possible? If so, how?

I have a hard disk(A) containing two partitions - A1 is a NTFS partition containing a windows OS, and A2 is an NTFS partition containing data. I want to copy both of these partitions onto a different, smaller hard disk(B) and have B be bootable (so copying the MBR would be helpful).

I've resized A1 so that the sum of A1 and A2 is less than the total size of B, but I can't use dd to copy the drive since the source drive is still larger and there's a gap in the partition table between A1 and A2. I've tried clonezilla, but it seems to have the same problem.

Is there a way for me to copy these partitions to B without having to go out and buy Ghost?

I have a trac install set up using fast-cgi on a server. I'm trying to install the bitten extension to it so I can do continuous integration - however the environment on which trac is running for some reason doesn't have ~/lib/pythonX.X/ in its python path - only /usr/lib/pythonX.X/ this is problematic since I can't install bitten with admin privileges (I don't have them).

What I'd like to do is change the pythonpath of trac so that it does search in ~/lib/pythonX.X/ but I can't figure out where to set or modify this. The trac install obviously doesn't read my .bash_profile so although I can set it there, that's no help.

Has anyone done this before, or can at least point me in the right direction?

So I have screen compiled with 256 colors, running on Konsole in 256 color mode. If start screen, the TERM is set to "screen". If I manually export the TERM to screen-256color everything works beautifully.

I have two questions. The first is why screen is setting the TERM to "screen" instead of "screen-256color" when it supports this? The second is, if I have the following line in my .screenrc file

term    screen-256color

why is screen still not setting my term?

Additional information: I'm running Screen version 4.00.03jw4 (FAU) 2-May-06 on Kubuntu Jaunty amd64
