I have a process that uses BULK INSERT to push two CSV files into SQL tables, so I can join their data with another table I have. The data coming from the CSV files generates tables about 100,000 rows each. When the process is done these tables are truncated. This whole process is running on a DB that was created just for that (no other activity).

After running this for a while in one minute cycles, the whole server becomes VERY slow. It looks like this activity is taking some resource and not releasing it. Even though the bulk insert and the join together take just about 5 seconds each time.

On a windows OS (Server 2003, XP, Vista, Win7 etc.), is there a performance penalty for having too many files in a single folder?

  • Will a folder scan become slower (when viewing the folder in windows explorer)?
  • Will direct access become slower (copying a file in/out of this folder for example)?
  • Is there a graph that show this speed correlation to number of files?

I noticed sometimes systems with large sets of files (log files etc.) will break the files into a hierarchy of folders, with each folder holding only a small set of items. Is there a technical benefit, or a scaling consideration behind this?

Is there a way to generate a SQL server maintenance plan that will be the same as the one generated by the wizard, but without going through the wizard dialog. I need something that can be created automatically as part as an install process.

Also, it looks like what the SQL wizard is generating, is specific to the current schema (for example for re-indexing tables). Will the wizard generated plan break on any schema change? If so, is there a way to update it, other that regenerating the whole thing again?

If I have two sets of database tables used by a system

  • Tables that collect results of some data processing. Most of the time get a lot of INSERT operations.
  • Tables that are used by the web application to generate pages and reports

For this question, lets assume the sets of tables are mutually exclusive (maybe there is some process that migrates data from the first to the second set periodically).

Will I see a performance difference between the two following setups

  • The two sets of tables are in one DB
  • The two sets of tables are in two separate DBs on the same SQL server
