We use Mac OSX 10.8 with Server 2.2.1.
When creating a calendar appointment on a client connected to the OSX server from within our local network (behind our firewall) we can select calendar resources and view other's availability. Outside our network, and in front of our firewall, this function does not work.
We currently have ports 389 and 636 (LDAP/SSL) as well as 8008 and 8443 (Calendaring/SSL).
My gut is telling me that Bonjour might be helping out when inside our network.
I would like to create a Samba share that filters the contents of a directory based on a series of regular expression matches against file names. For example, I would like the share to allow access to only files with an .xml extension, effectively ignoring any filenames that don't match the regex.
Are there any Samba VFS modules that provide this functionality?
Is it bad practice to have multiple IPs resolve via reverse DNS to the same hostname?
Consider a router with multiple interfaces: 1 WAN and 3 separate LANs. Is it appropriate for all four IPs resolve to router.domain.com, or should the WAN interface resolve to wan-router.domain.com and the LAN interfaces resolve to lan01-router.domain.com, lan02-router.domain.com and lan03-router.domain.com?
I am wondering if the following product even exists. Here's my wish list:
Bootable CD with simple (XML, YAML) configuration allowing you to spin up multiple virtual hosts, each with their own IP and with basic services like HTTP or SMTP. It doesn't require anything more than a server responding (with default data or a HELO) to a request on a port.

The Problem
I'd like to emulate a medium scale network (30 hosts) to test firewall and routing rules before deploying in a live environment. I don't care about network throughput, I just care that when I come in one interface I am firewalled and routed appropriately.
I could solve this with VMware (or some other virtualisation platform) but I feel like it's heavier than I need.
I run an apt-cacher-ng server on Ubuntu Linux which writes logs in the following format:

It shows the timestamp, direction (in or out), byte count, IP and filename.
Every time a line is written to it, I'd like to also send that line to another program. I will have this program insert the line into a database so that I can crunch some statistics about how much bandwidth we're saving through operating a caching server.
I do not want to cat the log file every X minutes (via cron) looking for new entries as it'd be somewhat computationally uneconomical. Instead I'd prefer to have a daemon monitor the log, and when a change is detected, each line is sent to my database-insertion script.
Will swatch achieve this, or are there better options?
When I install Ubuntu and tell it to use the first full disk, it creates the following partitions, numbered 1 and 5:
sda1 /
sda5 swap
When I create two partitions manually, the partitions are numbered 1 and 2:
sda1 /
sda2 swap
I believe this is because Ubuntu creates an extended partition, and then creates the swap partition in the new extended partition.
Using fdisk or GParted (or similar), how would one create a partition table exactly the same as the Ubuntu installer? How do I retain the default numbering style?
I have several Ubuntu Linux virtual machines running on VMware ESXi hosts that have all been allocated disks much larger than their required capacity. As space is now becoming an issue on our SAN, I'd like to investigate downsizing the allocated disk space on these machines.
All systems will be completely backed up imaged before I begin making changes, and I will always retain a pristine backup in case the partition resizing does not work.
Is there an easier way than the following procedure, or is their a better solution entirely?

Currently we use an iSCSI SAN as storage for several VMware ESXi servers. I am investigating the use of an NFS target on a Linux server for additional virtual machines. I am also open to the idea of using an alternative operating system (like OpenSolaris) if it will provide significant advantages.
What Linux-based filesystem favours very large contiguous files (like VMware's disk images)? Alternatively, how have people found ZFS on OpenSolaris for this kind of workload?

We currently have a dual-NIC Ubuntu server at our data centre acting as the gateway router between our public networks and our ISP. We have a /30 cross connect network on the ISP-facing NIC, and one IP from each of the three networks attached to our interior-facing NIC.
I would like to configure network traffic statistic generation and collection on this server, using Cisco's Netflow protocols. This will allow me to confirm our ISP's billing, as well as break-down data flow within our network.
What tools or packages would you recommend to passively capture traffic statistics and record them for later processing? Extra points if the Netflow collector has a MySQL data-store connector.
Does anyone have a tool or script that will recursively correct the file permissions on a directory?
On an Ubuntu Linux machine, a bunch of files were copied to a USB disk with full 777 permissions (user, group, other - read, write, execute) in error. I want to put them back in the user's directory corrected.
Directories should be 775 and all other files can be 664. All the files are images, documents or MP3s, so none of them need to be executable. If the directory bit is set then it needs execution, other wise it just needs user and group, read and write.
I figured it was worth checking if such a utility exists before hacking together a shell script :)
We've all seen the external drive cases that take a 3.5" drive and present it as a USB, eSATA or firewire device. I'm looking for the same sort of thing, but I want the case to take multiple drives (and preferably more than two).
I don't want any smarts in the box - it doesn't have to be a NAS, or do RAID, or try to do anything other than take multiple hard disks and present them as multiple, individual USB hard disks. The Drobo looks awesome, but it does too much thinking for me.
My ideal device would potentially contain a USB hub inside, but it could present a USB cable for each drive also.
I'm trying to avoid buying half a dozen individual cases and having half a dozen power plugs. I'm also trying to avoid running a full computer case just to power the drives.

I have an Acer WT 300 thin client that boots Windows CE. I purchased this device several years ago at an auction and need to reset the administration password so that I can alter the network configuration.
When I press F2 at the Terminal Connection Manger screen I'm prompted for a Terminal Settings password, which I do not have.
I'm chasing a thin client that can connect to an Ubuntu machine and utilize a modern widescreen LCD.
I have used Sun Microsystems SunRay 150 thin clients for several years however the SunRay Server Software is always annoying to configure and maintain, and is not officially supported on Ubuntu (which is my preferred Linux desktop). I'm looking for something more modern too, as the 150s only have a 15" display capable of a low resolution.
I have several old IBM-8363 thin clients which I'm about to begin experimenting with but they too seem to have a limited resolution.
We don't need processing power locally, which is why a thin client is a good fit for us.
Does anyone have any hardware recommendations?
