I'm using OpenVPN. I've successfully gotten a client going through the VPN. What I'd like to do now is monitor the connections a client is making.
I was able to follow the instructions here and get a management console going. But this only tells me what clients are connected, and their IP. It doesn't tell me the connections that that client itself is making that are exiting the tunnel.
How can I view these outgoing connections?
I have a remote machine running a server which I'd like access to locally. However, I can only SSH into the machine, not use any other ports.
I booted up an Amazon EC2 instances and opened all its ports. The plan is to set up a remote tunnel from the machine to the ec2 instance.
On the remote machine, the server is working:
$ links http://localhost:5555/foobs
This accesses the foobs page correctly. On EC2, I can access port 5555 if a server is hosted there:
$ echo really > index.html
$ python -m SimpleHTTPServer 5555
Serving HTTP on 0.0.0.0 port 5555 ...
Then, from my local browser: http://ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com:5555/ gives me the "really" page.
However, if I do port forwarding, from the machine:
$ ssh -R 5555:ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com:5555 -i keys/key.pem [email protected]
Then pointing my browser at http://ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com:5555/ does not get me the page. The app that uses it gives ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED. However, the port is being used. If from the ssh shell that's doing the forwarding I try to run the server on the same port:
$ python -m SimpleHTTPServer 5555
...
socket.error: [Errno 98] Address already in use
What gives? I am not the biggest networking wizard, as might be evident.
As the root user, I can change the password:

Is there a way to get a VM's name or UUID from within the VM itself, for a VM that is running on a VMWare ESX server? If so, what is the way?
My use case is: I'm cloning a bunch of VMs. A program running inside the clones connects to a server. I want to know which cloned VM that program is running on. What would be the best way to do that? I can assign it a number from the server automatically, print it out from the VM, and type it in manually, but that seems lame.
Is it possible to automatically create virtual machines using vSphere / ESXi? How would I go about doing that?
I have a script to automatically create + install windows on a VM using VirtualBox. It makes the VM, mounts the CD (which is an unattended XP install resulting in machine shutdown), then unmounts the CD when it notices the machine is off. Can I do something similar w/ vmware's stuff?
both VirtualBox and XenCenter have command line utilities which do things like let you turn machines on/off. Is there an equivalent cmd line utility for vsphere / ESXi?
I am making an unattended installation of Windows 7. I've gotten a bug down to this:
I start with a regular Win-7 Ultimate iso. If I install this manually on a VirtualBox virtual machine, everything works fine.
If I extract the iso to h:\win7lite, then re-make it with:
oscdimg -lWin7Lite -m -u2 -bh:\win7lite\boot\etfsboot.com h:\win7lite h:\result_win7lite.iso
(oscdimg gotten from WAIK), then install that... the installation finishes successfully, but the machine has no network connectivity. Not only that, it doesn't have a Local Area Connection set up. Not only that, but when I try to create one it says it cannot find any networking hardware. Inspecting the Device Manager shows that the Ethernet card is not working properly.
How would this extraction and re-packing break such a random thing?
I also notice it didn't ask me (on the re-made install) what network I was in (Home, Public, or Other), but it did ask me on the initial one. I'm pretty sure I changed nothing else.

It runs fine, installing with no GUI. However, two windows pop up asking whether to install two device drivers. This does not bode well for an automated install. Is there any way to force win7 to accept the drivers, or a registry key I can set to make it trust them?

This page says to do a silent install you pass in the parameters /s /v/qn. It mentions what /s does - silent install - but not what /v/qn does.
So what does it do? Why the weird format? (on one installer I tried /v /qn (with a space) and it didn't work. though on another i also had to do /S (uppercase) and /v/qn didn't seem to do anything.)

How can I get my guest VMs running with XenServer to have 32 bit color depth? The computer I'm on is at 32-bit. I RDP into a VM which is running XenCenter. I can't switch its color depth away from 16-bit, even though my RDP settings say 32-bit as the color depth from the session. From XenCenter on that VM I can go to the consoles of other VMs, but they can only be 16-bit or 24-bit.
EDIT: XenServer version 5.5.0, build date 2010-01-12, build number 25727p. I've installed XenServer tools on the VM in question.
To mount a network drive from the cmd prompt on windows I can do, for example:
net use z: \\vboxsvr\somedrive
How would I disconnect it from the cmd prompt?
I'm trying to make an install script. I want to install an .msi file, Python, and then install other things after Python is installed. I already see how to do a command-line install. However, msiexec returns right away, even when the install is still running. How would I detect the completion of an msi install from a batch script?

The Load Bias also called the Protocol Mask, is retained in the memory resident database referred to as the dynamic store on the data collector. The dynamic store uses the Load Bias value to inflate the load for the server during the client resolution phase until the true load value is received.
If a server is least loaded by a load value of 1000, a Load Bias of 100 decimal allows 10 connections to be resolved to that server before subsequent connections are balanced to the other servers. This is a temporary condition until the server sends the load update to the local data collector.
Is there any way to get a Guest VM's UUID from within the Guest VM itself? From the Host I can do vboxmanage list vms to get a list of all vm names and their user ids. From the Guest, even with VirtualBox Additions, I can't see a way to do it. The closest I've come was vboxcontrol guestproperty enumerate, but it doesn't seem to have UUID as a guest property.
I have a database running on a RAID5 array of SSDs. Could this be killing its performance? When I do many inserts in a row, the entire computer starts blocking up. Even things like firefox start glitching. On my much less powerful computer with a traditional hard drive, the inserts w/ the same database version, schema, and data run smoothly. Could this be the reason, or might it be some other factor?
I'm trying to set up virtual hosts on Mac OS X. I've been modifying httpd.conf and restarting the server, but haven't had any luck in getting it to work. Furthermore, I notice that it's not serving files in the DocumentRoot mentioned in httpd.conf (Libraries/WebServer/Documents), but in a different directory (/usr/local/apache2/htdocs). I don't see this folder mentioned anywhere in httpd.conf. Furthermore, PHP works, but the "LoadModule php5_module" line is commented out. This makes me think it's using another .conf file. How can I figure out which config is actually being loaded?
Update: I just deleted that httpd.conf and apache behaves the same after restart, so it definitely wasn't using it!
Is there any way to connect the root of a domain name to a dyndns account? This question reveals how to get www.whatever.com to point to dyndns, but is there a way to get whatever.com itself to point to it?
The domain is registered with GoDaddy if that matters.
I have two disks as .vmdk files, and four as .vdi files. I can boot virtual machines on them with Sun xMV VirtualBox, and they work just fine. However, I want to mount them on my local computer so I can read some files off of them without starting a virtual machine. I downloaded the vmware-mount utility, but I get this error, even when mounting .vmdk files, which should be VMWare images...
Unable to mount the virtual disk. The disk may be in use by a virtual
machine, may not have enough volumes or mounted under another drive
letter. If not, verify that the file is a valid virtual disk file.
Thinking it's a problem with the utility, I downloaded the SDK and made my own simple program in C to try to mount a disk. It just initializes the API, connects to it, then attempts to open the disk. I get this error, once again claiming it is not a virtual disk:

The files are clearly virtual disks, though, since I can actually mount and use them with a virtual machine. I tried detaching them from any VMs and trying again, but I got the same results.
Any ideas? Maybe the "descriptor above max size" is a hint?
Some more info: the .vmdk disks were created on other computers. I just copied them to mine and created new VMs around them, but they work fine. All the .vdi files were created on my machine. Not sure if that affects anything.
Update: WinMount can mount the file.. so the problem seems to be with vmware-mount.
