Due to past (bad) experience resulting from the GCJ stuff being provided by default on certain distributions, I've always traditionally installed the official Sun Java package on servers.
On Ubuntu it's been easy but now OpenJDK is a preferred option and easier to install... I wonder: is there any reason not to use it instead? As far as I understand it's the open source version of the Sun JDK.
FYI: Sun Java JDK 6u20 (for Ubuntu 10.04) is available from the Canonical Partner repository

We've got a customized distribution of Ubuntu, a repository with some custom packages and we run unattended-upgrades on a number of systems. What we want to be able to do is supply an update of one of our packages which might have a new dependency which is not yet installed.
I understand apt normally prevents that from happening automatically, and using dist-upgrade would permit it.
How can I get that behavior so our unattended upgrades work the same way?
Ideally we'd only want new packages installed if one of our packages causes it to be needed (either as a direct dependency or a child, etc.)
Should I be aware of any potential problems or increased risk of breakage. The systems are generally not easily accessed via the console so anything causing a problem requiring manual intervention would be very bad!
I am customizing an Ubuntu install CD. The requirements are that everything needed be included on the CD. I'd also like to remove everything that's not needed. The use case is not a general purpose PC, but more of a Kiosk/Appliance.
What I need is a way to determine which packages need to be on the CD and which ones I can safely remove. I can follow the dependency tree from the set of packages I list in my kickstart file, but there remains many packages I do not want. I also need a way to add new packages to the CD and automatically include any of the dependent packages automatically. I am working on scripts to do this but it seems like these tools must already exist. I've looked through the debian developer tools and haven't found anything that really applies to what I'm trying to do.
What I have found seemed to be debian-specific and likely wouldn't work for creating an Ubuntu install CD. (namely, the packages debian-cd and easycdd)
Is there a way to run a program in a chroot while still having access to stdin/stdout?
My first attempt was a shell script:
/usr/local/bin/real-app:

#!/bin/bash
chroot /var/lib/app-root /usr/bin/app $*
Then symlinked it where things expect to see it:
ln -s /usr/local/bin/real-app /usr/local/bin/app
But two issues here. First, the program requires root to run. I can deal with that. But second, there no longer seems to be a connection to STDIN/STDOUT which is how the parent process expects to control this application.
Is there a way to make this work? Do I need to have the app modified so it performs the chroot syscall itself?
I'd like to minimize downtime (during the "cutover" period).
We're running on EC2 with the data on an EBS volume. Is it safe to take a snapshot of the database volume while it's running and use that to restore on the new one or do I need to shut down the old database first?
How can I donate older, unused or surplus computers? What facilities or organizations exist? Can I ship equipment to them? Is it tax deductible? I'd like them to go directly into educational or low-income use, rather than being recycled for scrap metals.
I was just thinking about how Jabber and IM systems in general deal in "presence notification". I thought it'd be a neat hack to have a server (or possibly an individual application) log on to a Jabber account.
This does a couple things.

FYI: Jabber is the protocol behind Google Talk.
I'd like to configure an installer for Ubuntu which runs in 'unattended' mode and answers all the questions with defaults or pre-configured settings. Ideally it should run and reboot on it's own, resulting in a working system with no user input.
Redhat has this with Anaconda (I beleive it's called Kickstart?).
I know there is debian-installer, but I'm not sure how Ubuntu works or if it's very different. We definately want to use Ubuntu for this.
Right now we only have one back-end server per site/web service. I'd be interested to hear people's experiences with various load balancer apps (something that runs on Linux).
What would you recommend?
