I am trying to move a domain (website and email server) from a Windows 2003 server to a Linux server. Moving the website and database over has been tedious (but successful) but I'm not sure how to move the IMAP mailboxes.

I've done many server migrations before but always with *nix servers, where I have either used a cPanel transfer or a set of rsync scripts but Windows doesn't have rsync and anyway I don't have access to the mail folder structure to just copy it over.

The Windows hosting company have suggested that I ask all the users to manually copy their emails from the old server accounts to the new accounts, but this is a lot of clients and GBs of mails and will take a long time.

Can I ask them to zip up a mail folder and send it to me? Does Windows have a standard mail folder structure 'under the hood'?

I've just moved two sites to a new server. They are both similar, Drupal based sites. One loads normally (1-3 seconds) but the other takes up to 12-15 seconds. After much logging and measuring I've found that most of the delay is waiting for a response from the server. That is, when I load the page in the browser, it takes up to 10 seconds for Apache on the server to get the request. I've double checked the DNS entries but cannot find anything wrong.

How can I narrow down what the cause of this may be?

If i try to run the following:

<?php echo file_get_contents("http://www.yahoo.com/index.html"); ?>

through the web server I get a an "php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo" error.

If I run the same file from the shell with:

php test.php

then I get the expected file output.

This indicates to me that the 'nobody' user, which the webserver runs as, is not able to resolve the domain name, but the shell user can.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Further info: CentOS 6, cPanel install, Apache, PHP running as dso.

BTW, I've tried disabling the firewall to no effect.

[SOLVED] - when I found that gethostbyname() was working, I realised that it was some internal caching problem. A server restart seems to have sorted out the problem.
