I am using puppet to set up VirtualBox, Ubuntu 10.10 guest, Mac OSX host.

Once I get to a shell, things are working fine.

However, it seems to take a while, to download .iso and create the virtual machine itself.

I'd like to find a way to do this really quickly, I'll be needing the ability

to blow away and quickly reform virtual machines, ideally like "soap bubbles."

In the cloud, libcloud is working fine, but that is only one case.

What are my options to quickly create a virtualbox instance?

I've set a filetype in vim for this. I want the help program to be man. Of course this does not work. For instance, with ssh_config's manpage, if I am on a word, say ServerAliveCountMax, I get an error, since there is no man pager for ServerAliveCountMax -- it's inside ssh_config's manpage.

From the command line, is there any way to jump to a string or run some type of command inside man? Just like how info can take me to the Miscellaneous section of screen's info page:

info screen Miscellaneous

Is this possible with man? Even running a search would serve...

For OSX/*BSD with /usr/bin/man, this works:

man -P 'less -p PATTERN' ssh_config

I've been digging deep into what actually comes with osX in /usr/bin and especially /usr/libexec.

Quite good stuff really, although the command syntax is a bit.. odd.

Let me direct the curious to the command that made me think of this:

networksetup -printcommands

I can not think of a command that better illustrates the need for good completion. 

security -h

perhaps, but those commands have a familiar easy-to-read format.

I beseech the community, please point me to a place where I can find such a thing. I never type them right, and I ache for tab completion for this

Anyone have any idea where I could grab something? I'd prefer to stand on the shoulders of giants instead of trying to make a zsh/bash completion script leap into the world, ready for battle, like Athena, from my forehead.

I am no Zeus when it comes to compctl. Not at all.

Runing snow leopard, I'd like to find a way to say:

"Right now, this is what's is running and this is who is running it" I've enabled process accounting and auditing, which should tell me this, but I thought I'd ask here to see if there were other insights.

So, how can I quickly find out which daemons are running, besides using launchctl list? Or is there a way to modify that somehow to get a list of the running daemons?

I understand that there is a switch from init.d to init in Ubuntu. Init.d was fine for me, but I can see and appreciate the change. I am also incredibly thankful that the config files are not foul XML, like launchd's are. Good ideas.

However, using maverick, I still see an awful lot of stuff in init.d. I had thought that upstart was the way forward. I am certain that upstart + init.d is not as simple as either one alone.

So how do I determine the startup procedure, or where to look for files to control some server?

EDIT: More to the point, I guess I'm asking how does the interaction between upstart and sysvinit work today? I am suspicious of the wiki, much of it seems to be from older versions.

I've built nginx, and I'd like to use upstart to start it:

nginx upstart script from the site:

description "nginx http daemon"

start on runlevel 2

stop on runlevel 0
stop on runlevel 1
stop on runlevel 6

console owner

exec /usr/sbin/nginx -c /etc/nginx/nginx.conf  -g "daemon off;"

respawn

I get "unknown job" when i try to use initctl to run it, which I just learned apparently means there is an error, ( what's wrong with "Error" to describe errors?)

Can someone point me in the right direction ? I've read the documentation , as it is, and it seems kind of sparse for a SysV init replacement... but whatever just need to add this job to the list, run it, and get on with what's left of my life... Any tips?

We were using Lenny. ( Well Sid, really ). Had to do that for development. I upgraded my server with ubuntu 10.04, for a different project. Noticed the packages. Wearing my developer hat, it's a no brainer. Everything we need is there.

I'm the admin as well. We might need more than one "box" (running on VPS for now). I do not want to build things that apt would put on for me. It's not hard, but I'm going to need that time.

The debian "box" has a bunch of stuff on it, that'll have to be integrated properly, but I think we are going live in a distressingly short time. (Just found out.)

I am aware of the reflexive answers to this question. What I would like to ask is are there critical bugs or critical instabilities that would make one shy away from the ubuntu/server path? I could not find any bugs that would stop me, but perhaps there is something?
