I'm getting a very strange error when I try to launch SSMS from my taskbar. It seems to open in normal speed, but responds to any input with just a beep. CPU usage is 0% in Task Manager, and there is no [not responding] message.
It doesn't respond to a right-click & close all windows command from the taskbar, but "End Task" from task Manager does kill it.
When I launch from the command line and specify the server using the -S switch & use Windows Auth using -E it runs fine.
I'm running Veeam right now to back up VMs to disk which is great, but I like taking home a tape every night as an offsite backup. Integration with NTBackup is simple, just put a "ntbackup backup [vm files] [tape drive]" command to run at the end of the Veeam job.
Unfortunately NTBackup is no more in Server 2008, and my Server 2003 box is getting some grey hair.
What sort of things should I look for when purchasing tape backup solutions to enable me to keep the same functionality I currently have?
... this isn't as bad as it sounds since it's just a test domain.
I created a small test domain on my vmware server to play around with active directory settings. I had two DCs and a Win7 & winXP client. At some point I needed the space so I backed up all of the VMs to tape and forgot about it for six months. I recently decided I wanted to play around with some more AD settings in the test domain, so I restored the domain controllers from the backup and tried to log in.
I got the ominous sounding "There are no logon servers available to service the login request" message when I tried to log into the test DC. Apparently active directory gave up the ghost and I can't even log into the domain controller.
So, is there a way to fix this - some kind of defibrilator for active directory to shock it back to life? If not it's not such a loss since it is fairly easy to whip up a few more VMs and make a new test domain.
The Domain Controllers are both Server 2008R2 core.
I have a Windows Server 2003 instance which was once running on physical hardware but now runs on vmware esxi. Disk 0 was once a physical RAID, but is now a vmware virtual hd with a primary partition for the C drive and a second logical drive for the E drive.
Enlarging the VMWare virtual disk is easy, but I'm having trouble extending the E drive. Diskpart.exe won't let me use the "extend" command as it is a logical drive.
I'd rather avoid third party stuff like partition magic as it is an important server and I don't want to risk anything strange happening.
Is there an easy way to move a logical drive to a physical drive?
I've been noticing some strange behavior on an asp.net application that uses windows authentication to secure an admin directory. Basic auth is disabled.
For most pages within that directory everything works as expected, but some pages pop up a second credentials box. The strange this is that when the exact same credentials are typed in the request is completed as normal.
What I don't understand is why the cached credentials work on some pages but not on others. Any ideas as to how to begin debugging? The server is 2008R2.
I've just got two new machines from Dell and did a fresh reinstall of Win7 64 bit pro to remove the obligatory dell preinstalled crapware, joined my domain and rebooted.
For some reason the home page in IE still points to dell.com even though I've set it in Group Policy. I can run RSOP on the new machine, and they show that the home page should be reset to my company intranet page, but when I open an IE window it goes to dell. I can, of course, manually reset the home page in IE but I would rather take this as a learning experience to find out why IE doesn't listen to Group Policy.

I'm looking to make the move from XP to 7 and was wondering what other people have experienced. I've got about 20 desktops I need to replace as the hardware is probably insufficient for Win7.
I looked at Dell, but they don't seem to be able to sell a clean Windows install anymore - it's always full of some kind of preloaded junk I would need to uninstall. I'm not too thrilled about the process of doing 20 OS reinstalls to get it right.
But, If I have to go in that direction I might as well get no-OS PCs and volume licensing so I don't need to worry about product keys.
I had a look at the MS Volume licensing site but it seems awfully opaque. Even the "volume license calculator" doesn't seem to work, at least on my IPad this morning.
So, I'm interested in what the consensus is for the best way to buy 20 desktops.
What is less painful :
I'm looking to buy 5 new Win7 boxes and would like to ease deployment by cloning the OS. What I would like to do is install a fresh OS (Dell doesn't seem to sell machines without preinstalled crapware anymore) and then install a few apps on the first one.
Once it is just right, I want to clone the OS and install the image on the other four machines and just change the machine name.
Is this possible to do without any extra third party software? What I am thinking of doing is backing up the disk image of the first machine to a network share, and then booting the others to the windows install DVD and restoring the same image on each machine.
Has anyone had any luck with this technique?
I've set up Failed Request Tracing for a test site, but it is not measuring the speed the page takes to render.
It just says "Time Taken: 0 msec"
I've set up a similar test site on a different server and I do get a measurement for speed.
Failed Request Tracing should measure the speed the page takes to serve, right?
I've got a page that couldn't be more simple:

... but it takes forever to load. There is no database or web service call to slow it down. The trace command reveals that the time from Begin PreInot to End Render is .000049 seconds, but the page itself takes several seconds to load. It is a new web site I just created for this test, and just has a web.config & two test files. The only thing in the web.config is access control:

What else could IIS be doing with all of that time?
I'm a bit consused by Identity Impersonation in IIS7.5
In the good old days you could just put in the web.config and call it good. Directories could then be locked down to a specific user, and then IIS would be able to access resources, such as Sql Server stored procedures, that that user had permissions to.
With the new integrated pipleline, this no longer works. I could switch to "classic" pipeline, but that will only work for so long so I want to do things the preferred "modern" way.
I definitely want to keep two tiers of security. The anonymous side of the site will have access to the SPROCs needed to display anonymous data, and the admin portion will have additional access. Without identity impersonation, how can this be done?
I'm seeing some strange behavior from a Server 2008 R2 box running .net 4 and IIS 7.5 in an integrated app pool.
The root web.config is pretty clear that I want to use windows authentication.

I have a directory that I would like to secure, so I've added the following web.config to that directory:

Windows Authentication is enabled in IIS, and specified by the root web.config, so I expected the usual Challenge/Response dialog to pop up and ask for a password. Instead I got redirected to a non-existent URL http://mysite.com/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2ftestdir
Which seems to be the default login directory for Forms Authentication, which I'm not using so the request returns a 404 error.
ACLs on the underlying directories allow the intended user to access the file.
Anybody seen IIS behave in this manner?
I just reinstalled a Dell box with WinXP SP3 and proceeded to try to run Windows Update to download patches, but I got a redirect to KB2497281.
This KB article is rather misleading. It states that Windows Update doesn't run without SP3, but my CD already has SP3.
I've manually reinstalled SP3 to no avail. I've also started and restarted automatic updates service. I've left it running with automatic updates turned on for a few days but nothing updated.
I then checked another WinXP install that had been running updates successfuly and was fully patched as of a month ago, and it also cannot run Windows Update.
I tried re-installing the Windows Update Manager based on kb949104 to no avail.
I know MS is trying to push XP out the door but this is just too rough.
I just took delivery of a new desktop from Dell with win7 pro preinstalled. I removed the preinstalled dell crapware and then installed the software I really needed, ran updates and joined my domain. To my surprise I found that the group policy settings that customized my the home page to the company intranet did not apply.
It's strange because I had just created a new win7 VM and installed the OS from scratch. After the domain join, the homne page was set by group policy as normal. I really haven't changed this GP setting in a few years and it has always worked without a hitch.
I guess the next time I get a new box from Dell I'll format the HD and install Windows from scratch. That's not a great option right now because I've already installed all of my apps.
Anybody know how I can debug this and possibly get these GPOs working without a full reinstall?
I'm trying to install SP3 on an install of Sql Server 2005 running on Server 2003 32 bit. When I run the installer it doesn't seem to recognize that I have SQL Server 2005 installed. The dialog box that asks what features should be updated doesn't show any by default. More troubling, it doesn't allow me to check any of those boxes to update features like Database Services or Reporting Services.
When I select one of these services, the "Status" box says "Not Valid". The message says something about more recent updates, but Select @@Version gives me this:

If I want to ban all plugins but the Google Toolbar, Flash & Windows Update on XP, there isn't a clear explanation on how to do it. It seems that I would have to know the ClassID of every toolbar I would like to allow.
The article doesn't really go into how an admin would find these ClassIDs. Does Flash have a different ClassID for each version? Does it vary by OS? What about Windows Update on XP boxes - it requires a plugin that would need to be expressly enabled.
It's such a common problem that there should be an easy solution. It would be great if there was just a checkbox list of common plugins, so you could enable Flash for everyone, Google Toolbar for devs, Windows Update for XP, etc.
I'm experimenting with Group Policy settings. My DC is running Server 2003, and the client I am using for this test is running Win7. I've restarted the client a few times, and tried running gpupdate/force for good measure.
This machine is in it's own OU with a group policy applied to change one setting, Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Network/Offline Files.
When I run MMC and look at Local Computer Policy on the client this setting shows up as "not configured".
