I heard from Tier 3 vendor support that NFS has some sort of limit (I was told 16) as to the number of concurrent operations that can be executing at the same time.
I apologize that I don't have any more specifics, and some Googling hasn't turned up what I am looking for.
Does this hard limitation of NFS exist, and if so, could someone explain a bit more about it?
I am searching for specific criteria/events that will cause Windows 2008 to mark a SAN volume as offline in disk management, even though it is connected to that SAN volume via FC or iSCSI.
Microsoft states that "A dynamic disk may become Offline if it is corrupted or intermittently unavailable. A dynamic disk may also become Offline if you attempt to import a foreign (dynamic) disk and the import fails. An error icon appears on the Offline disk. Only dynamic disks display the Missing or Offline status."
I am specifically wondering if, on the SAN, changing the path to the disk (such as the disk being presented to the host via a different iSCSI target IQN or a different LUN #) would cause a volume to be offlined in disk management.

Edit: I have already found two reasons why a disk might be set offline, disk signature collisions and the SAN disk policy. Bounty would be awarded to someone who can find further documented reasons related to changes in the volume's path.

Consider the following setup:
Windows 2008 R2, MPIO feature installed. Two iSCSI NICs (not bonded), 1Gb each.
Storage: Compellent, 2x 1Gb iSCSI ports, single controller.
In my tests I have confirmed that using Round Robin MPIO, both iSCSI NICs on the host are active during a single-worker IOMETER test. Both iSCSI NICs on the storage are also active during this test. I am seeing about 50% to 60% utilization on each host NIC, and I would expect more. I am using a crappy D-Link switch at the moment and this certainly is not helping, so I'm not super concerned about this yet.
My question is this: instead of "how can I make this particular setup perform", I would like to know, more generally, if round robin (active/active) MPIO allows me to get greater than 1Gb bandwidth from the host to the storage, using a single I/O stream (like copying a file, or running a single worker IOMETER test).
If yes, why? If no, why not?
We are moving our network from a flat 192.168.x.x/16 to a routed network to be composed of several /24 subnets and a layer 3 switch.
It is a Windows network, active directory integrated, standard Microsoft stuff. Client machines are Win2k, Win2k3, Win2k8, WinXP, Vista, Win7.
One thing that has popped up is that I am concerned with being able to see all computers in "my network places" or "network neighborhood" (whatever they are calling it these days) :). I know that NetBIOS only works on the local subnet because it is a broadcast protocol and does not cross routers.
So I want to make sure my WINS infrastructure is ready to handle this change, even if we aren't actually using WINS for anything at the moment. The truth to that is that I don't know and I can't afford for it to break at the moment, so we have to maintain this ability to browse across subnets and see all of the computers.
What I haven't quite figured out is whether I need a WINS server on each subnet or just one in the entire network. I think this is how it works, but I'm not sure...
1) A master browser is elected amongst each computer on each subnet (uses broadcast traffic), NetBIOS name resolution works just fine within the subnet (uses broadcast traffic)
2) that master browser uses a direct IP protocol (which crosses subnets just fine) to connect to its WINS server (which must be properly configured in its IP settings) and tell the WINS server what it sees.
3) it follows that only one WINS server is needed across the entire network, as long as all hosts are configured properly to look at it... or not? Do I need WINS servers on each subnet?
Additionally, are there any other considerations? I am only aware of NETBIOS as the only microsoft networking service (aside from DHCP, which we're aware of) that requires broadcast to work properly. Anything else that should be on my radar?

I have a situation where I need to boot a VM into normal mode but disable as many services as possible. Basically we are doing a virtual to virtual conversion of the VM and the fewer services running, the less likely that a file will be locked and unable to be copied.
The conversion program (Citrix XenConvert) uses VSS to take a snapshot but still files are sometimes skipped because they are open.
I know the obvious question is "why not boot into safe mode with networking" - unfortunately, if I do that, it messes with the virtualization tools.
Ideally it would be a script that gets the vendor of every service that is running, and if the vendor is NOT microsoft, it stops the service. Even better would be an exclusion list, so that I could say "don't stop this vendor's services".
Do you incredibly smart and resourceful people have any idea where that script could be found? Or cobbled together quickly?

"Back in the day" we always segregated our OS drives (in Windows) from our Data drives. In the Linux world, although I am much less familiar with it, I am aware that the wisdom dictates even more volumes defined and used in a best-practice configuration.
Now that server storage is just as likely to be on a SAN (where the disk resources are shared by many individual operating systems and applications), does it really matter any more that the OS and Data partitions be segregated at the volume level?
What are your thoughts?
All I need is to have an Excel list of file paths and use Powershell to append (not replace) the same extension on to each file.
It should be very simple, right? The problem I'm seeing is that if I go import-csv -path myfile.csv | write-host I get the following output:
@{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\appendto.me}
@{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\append_list.csv}
@{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt}
In other words it looks like it's outputting the CSV "formatting" as well.
However if I just issue import-csv -path myfile.csv, the output is what I expect:

C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\appendto.me
C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\append_list.csv
C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt
Clearly there's no file called "@{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt}" and a rename on that won't work, so I'm not sure how to best get this data out of the import-csv command, or whether to store it in an object, or what.

I want to find out whether there is a way in Microsoft Groove to find out which spaces a user is in (and conversely which spaces the user is not in).
We run a free script called Personal Backup for Groove for our backups. The script dumps out all the groove spaces that our "backup user" is a member of. However, if someone creates a new space and doesn't invite the backup user, that space will never get backed up. We're trying to find a way to audit the "backup user" membership so that we can ensure that it's invited to all spaces.
