I've created a directory as root, but when I try to change ownership if it, it won't change! I have no idea why. (I've snipped the results of ls -halg for brevity, in case you're wondering why some files are missing...)

When I made the tomcat directory yesterday, it was happy to chown -R /opt/tomcat everything to the tomcat user like it should. I'm really at a loss at why such a simple command fails.

While following this tutorial on installing tomcat on CentOS I came across a problem executing the line sudo systemctl enable tomcat - it complains with the following error message:

The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy, RequiredBy, Also, Alias
settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance for template units).
This means they are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.

However, I clearly have an entry in my [Install] section:

How can I get it to allow me to enable this service? I believe I've done everything right that it's asking for.

I'm trying to test a number of Nortel Networks BayStack 470-48T switches. I can connect a machine per port, but it's a 48 port switch. I have two machines, and my plan was to plug one in and move the other 'down the line' testing each one as I went with a constant ping. Unfortunately, once a machine has been plugged into one port, the switch won't accept that machine on any other port. How can I make the switch clear its information on disconnect so I can quickly test each port?

I'm trying to get php_mysql to work. I'm on a windows 7 box, with php

When I have ;extension=php_mysql.dll commented out like that, apache works, php works, and of course mysql in the background is working, but I cannot use mysql with php. (My objective is to install a phpBB3 forum, and it doesn't list mysql as available.)

Now something I notice is that while php works in apache (that is, it serves up php pages appropriately), it fails on the command line. I don't know if this is related or if I'm just doing it wrong from the command line. Moving on...

I'll try to provide whatever logging, versioning, or configuration data you might need to diagnose this issue.

I have two programs both of which are in Java.

Program A was written by me. If it wants to establish an external connection, I'm okay with this.

Program B was not written by me. If it wants to establish an external connection, I'm not okay with this.

How can I configure iptables to allow java A to make outgoing connections, but java B to be denied?

If iptables can't be used for this, what other options do I have?

I have a very annoying message being output from a process I'm running. I'd rather not remove the line, but simply remove it with grep

The messages to ignore all contain the word "requests". I could easily ONLY these lines with

$> myproc | grep requests

How would I make grep instead IGNORE lines with the word requests?

I'm not feeling the best, so I'm remoting in to work with a VPN. However, it gobbles out all outgoing connections, which means putty sessions and internet usage don't work when the VPN is connected (because it goes through the VPN instead of my local internet.)

Is there a way I can force my connections to go through my local router instead of through the VPN connection? On a winxp box at the moment.

On the bright side, that means I can't let SO distract me while I'm working, so maybe I should let it stay this way!!

In this question I see a line like this that will allow me to say "allow these ip addresses to connect"

iptables -A INPUT -m iprange --src-range 10.50.10.20-80 -j ACCEPT

Now, I want to further secure this so that this rule only applies to specific ports. I've been using a command like this for my regular ports:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

Can I combine these two to make a specific port allowed only for a range, like this

iptables -A INPUT -m iprange --src-range 10.50.10.20-80 --dport 12345 -j ACCEPT

Obviously I'm hesitant to just make iptables calls willy-nilly. :) Thanks!

Let's say I want port 12345 open on my box, but I only want to allow a connection through a secure socket (SSL). Is there a flag I can add to the following command:

/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 12345 -j ACCEPT

Situation: I'm inspired to work from home this evening. So I download some source from work's svn repo. Unfortunately, I find some lib files are missing. Not a problem, I'll remote in to my desktop at work and check out the environment there and see what I'm missing. Only windows-7 sucks at authentication and won't let me log in. However, I was able to access my file system via a share I have set up by remoting into a win-xp box on our network.

So if I could find a windows xp box on my network, I could use that to view my files at work. I can putty in to a server on the network, but it's a unix box. If I could see a list of servers that are up, I could easily pick one I know is windows and move forward.

What command can I type into the shell prompt to give me a list of available servers?

I'm writing a Groovy script to do an SCP. Note that I haven't ran it yet, because the rest of it isn't finished. Now, if you're doing an scp for the first time, have to authenticate the fingerprint. Future times, you don't.

My current solution is, because I get 3 tries for the password, and I really only need 1 (it's not like the script will mistype the password... if it's wrong, it's wrong!) is to pipe in "yes" as the first password attempt. This way, it will accept the fingerprint if necessary, and use the correct password as the first attempt. If it didn't need it, it puts yes as the first attempt and the correct as the second.

However, I feel this is not a very robust solution, and I know if I were a customer I would not like seeing "incorrect password" in my output. Especially if it fails for another reason, it would be an incredibly annoying misnomer.

What follows is the appropriate section of the script in question. I am open to any tactics that involve using scp (or accomplishing the file transfer) in a different way. I just want to get the job done. I'm even open to shell scripting, although I'm not the best at it.
