I have a Cyclades TS100 which is used to communicate with a Modbus Slave. I selected Protocol: Modbus and configured MODBUS Serial Mode: RTU

The thing is, I event don't get a connection to the Serial Server on my selected port. What is the secret?

(The device itself works fine, even over the Serial Server, if I configure it to Socket Raw and speak to it via Modbus/RTU over TCP)

UPDATE: it seems that sometime in the past it was decided to comment out the modbus service from inetd.conf, so this was the sole reason the communication didn't work.

As far as I read, the problem is supposed to be that java tries to allocate a continuous chunk of memory, and this doesn't work in some virtual environments (Xen, openVZ and others).

Is there a solution for this problem?

We have a kiosk like terminal, with a customized Ubuntu installation (customized only in that way, that only a few packages are installed, and the installation process is unattended). The thing is, on the terminal we tested, it works fine, but on the production one, grub hangs 2 seconds before it would actually boot the default kernel automatically.

The supposedly only change is, that on the test version we had, there is a hard disk, the production ones have flash drives. But that shouldn't be a problem, should it? If we hook up a keyboard, press ESC go into the grub menu, pick the default menu entry, it boots.

What could be a reason for this behaviour?

UPDATE: I think we found the bug. It seems there is a defect in the hardware. The clock doesn't work, so it seems the interrupt for the timer doesn't work as well, therefor the count down in grub doesn't work as well.

I need a linux distribution which is modular and configurable. For instance I need a kernel with special touch screen support. Other than that there are only a few apps which should be installed. Therefore I want to be able to configure which packages are to be installed. Gnome as the standard desktop environment would be a bonus. It should be able to start from an USB stick and have a installation tool which I could use to install it to the harddrive. I want to be able to run the build of the distro unattended.

Is there a distro which fullfills all those requirements?

The only (life) distribution I have experience with is Knoppix, but remastering is very time-consuming, not unattended, and not quite modular.

Update: Maybe I should be a bit clearer. I need a customizable distribution. I want to be able to, lets say check a few boxes which software should be installed, click a button and 15 min later I have my image which I could copy on a USB stick.
