I have a couple of old SIEMENS CNCs that only talk to windows SMBv1 network shares for network data transfer. Our network shares are provided by Server 2019 where SMBv1 is defaulted to disabled (presumably for good reason).
What would be secure way of setting up a SMBv1 share on the server? If I enabled that feature, can it be limited to just one share or user or IP address?
Such that only up to N licenses can be shared between 5 x N users on different computers at the same time?
When connecting a managed networked device (printer, router/switch, PC based software service) to a domain, mostly these days it has a https management or user access web portal. When viewing these web pages from a browser it will complain about the device not having a trusted certificate - usually because it is self-signed (by itself).
What is the best protocol for removing this warning for an internal staff accessed situation?
Regarding set-up of IMAP on exchange 2010 sp3, there are a couple of things I don't understand.
1) I have SSL v2 & v3 disabled on the server via registry. So how are clients able to connect to the exchange server on port 993 with SSL enabled? Is it actually falling back to no security or falling forward to TLS?
2) According to the below dialogue, TLS should use port 143, but also no encryption should use port 143. So which is it? Is it purely controlled by the next tab 'Authentication'?
3) With the IMAP receive connector shown below, does the 'Integrated Windows Authenication' also only operate after the TLS connection is established or does it work outside the TLS connection?
Is it possible to set up the standard backup system in SBS 2011 (or Server 2008 R2) to use an internal drive as a destination as well as external drives?
Before you say yes, from my tests and from what I've read on the web, backups with internal drives included as a destination always seems to prefer the internal drive over connected external ones. (Regardless of what drive might be marked as 'active'). So no data ever gets written to a plugged in external drive.
In my opinion external drives should always have priority over internal drives or including them is pointless.
I have a Proliant ML350 G8 with two SAS raid arrays currently set up - thereby maxing the default P420i raid controller. I need to set up a large video dump space in addition to this existing set-up (for non backed up, non-critical, temporary storage).
I had planned to just add a 2TB SATA disk and plug it into the motherboard. However I it occurred to me the motherboard might have built-in mirror RAID support? Therefore I could use two SATA disks and have some semblance of redundancy.
Is this possible? Or would I need to get a cheap raid card? Any recommendations?
I'm looking for a HTTP based file repository / web application to facilitate passing large files back and forth to clients. Something similar to http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/?f=intro but more server friendly and easier for our staff to maintain client accounts. Features need include:
Originally we used to use an FTP server, but that proved too hard for some clients to cope with. Then we moved to HFS, but its not simple enough for our staff to manage.

Recently I've been looking at a range of network server cabinets with a mesh door at the rear. At the top of the cabinet are ceiling mounted fans with dust filters attached. These fans suck air out of the cabinet - presumably to remove the hot air that has risen to the top.
My question is why do these fans have dust filters? What point do they serve? If the air flow is pulled in by these fans through the mesh door, then surely they are not there to protect the hardware inside from dust?
Also, there are other minor grilled gaps around the enclosure, how does this kind of ventilation design work?
When buying a FBWC storage controller such as HP's P420, you can choose either a 512MB, 1G, or 2G capacity. What differences do these capacity sizes provide? Is there a metric I can use to choose between them?
Is it related to an 'all-the-time' throughput performance statistic or is it more related to the 'time-of-failure' file size statistic?
On the same machine with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express installed, can the last stand-alone version of the Management Studio be installed? That would be SQL Server 2008 Management Tools. Or does it have to be the latest version that comes with the R2 installer?
Is there any point/benefit to having a battery back unit on a raid controller if write caching is disabled?
I have a HP Proliant ML350 G5 server that experienced a power supply failure overnight. The power supply was replaced but unfortunately it got restarted with only 1 disk in the RAID 1 set plugged in. (The raid controller is the build in E200i).
The raid BIOS then said on start-up that it had entered Interim Recovery Mode. However I would have expected it to still start up with only the 1 drive. The bios however says that it cannot find a C: drive and enters a reboot loop polling the other boot devices. First question is, is this normal behaviour not to start up on 1 disk?
The second drive was then plugged in (all drives are ok) and the raid bios started an automatic rebuild on that disk. This appears to be a background process as there is no progress shown. However based on the light flashing it looks like it is working. My second question is how long will this rebuild take? (36GB 15K SAS drive).
I cannot see any error messages and it looks like it is rebuilding the drive ok, but the computer still will not start-up. It still says during the boot up process that the C: drive is not found. If I wait for the rebuild to finish, is it likely to fix itself and find the C: drive? Or is there some other problem here?

These are the conclusions I made after solving this issue.
1) No it is not normal. On our system (as most others), if one of the RAID 1 disks is missing or in the process of being rebuild, the single remaining disk should still operate fine and boot up correctly. (Although the controller does drop into a reduced performance mode.)
2) The RAID 1 rebuild on our system took about 4.5 hours to reconstruct the disk after it was put back in. Seemed like a long time to me for a RAID 1+0 36GB 15k rpm SAS drive that wasn't being used at the time. But that's what it took. (As an experiment, I pulled and replaced a 10k rpm 146GB SAS drive from this machine's companion RAID 5 array which uses 4 disks. It took less than 2 hours. Go figure.)
3) The fundamental problem I was having with this machine turned out to be a corruption in the machine's NVRAM. I can only assume the power supply fault was responsible for corrupting it. Although there was no obvious signs in the BIOS as anything being wrong. All the settings looked as they should be. However after clearing the NVRAM via the S6 switch on the motherboard, the system booted without problem. I guess the referenced boot controller had somehow changed in some underlying BIOS setting. (Incidentally if you do this, don't forget to reset the date and time before letting your server get carried away with receiving mail and missing backups.)
From time to time a device running its own DHCP server gets accidentally plugged into our SBS 2003 network. When this happens SBS 2003 shuts down its DHCP service - which means that at 7am the next morning our network grinds to halt.
Presumably there is some logic to why a domain controller would stop it's DHCP server service like that, but I would like for it not to shut down.
How can I go about doing that? Is the best way some DHCP option or is it better via service failure recovery?
I'm trying to set up a contact in SBS 2003 Exchange so that an external party can have an internal email address which auto-forwards to them. All the web examples I can find point to a very straight forward method invovling creating contact in the Active Directory Users, then navigating to the 'Exchange General' tab in the properties for that contact. Supposedly one should find a 'Delivery Options' button where a forwarded email address entry field can be found. However there is no such button when I look. Certainly that button exists if I look at the properties of a normal 'User' for the system. But not when dealing with a 'Contact'. Almost every website I look at says it should exist. Any thoughts?
