Where can I find the difference between different HPE drive models?
Specifically, I need to get several 4TB HPE SATA drives for a HPE DL380 server, and I don't understand the difference between a 872491-B21 4TB drive, and a 861752-B21 4TB drive. I am finding them in different tables and datasheets, but cannot identify the difference, yet the latter is almost 3x more expensive.
What's the difference?
we are using Windows Server 2012 R2 to provide some iSCSI targets for other servers. The server has a storage pool, and there is a virtual disk on top of that, and then an iSCSI target is created on this virtual disk.
However, after server restart, the target is always lost and the initiator cannot connect to this target. If I then restart the Microsoft iSCSI Software Target service (i.e. "WinTarget"), the target is initialized properly and works fine.
Since I believe this is a dependency issue, I tried setting the service startup to "Automatic (Delayed Start)", but it fails with an error ("The delayed start could not be set, parameter is incorrect").
Is this a known issue? I.e. if yes, how do I delay startup of this service?
Regarding costs and maintenance speed/simplicity in case of hardwar failures, does it make any sense to keep SQL data files on a NAS server, separate from the SQL Server instance? Our app stores large amounts of measurements (time-series) from many devices, so the amount of data is relatively big to keep on relatively small SAS server disks (~200GB monthly).
Although there is a greater risk of accessing files over ethernet (even if only the db server and NAS are on the same switch), having data files completely separated seems like it would simplify things in case of hardware issues due to lower coupling - the database server can be much simpler (I can migrate the simple image quickly, it can even be bundled with the application server for all simpler apps), and fixing NAS failures should also mostly involve switching disks, or switching to a copy in case of failures.
Are there some better (cost effective and faster to apply) ways to manage quick migration in case of failures which would not involve separating the data files, or is this idea not so problematic?
I tried adding a pair of 4TB WD RE disks to a HP Proliant ML350 G6 server, but the ACU utility shows them as having a capacity of 0.0 GB.
Is this a known issue? From the documentation for the Smart Array P410 Controller, I believe it should support 4TB drives. I am not planning on using them as a boot drive either, just to add some RAID1 storage to the box.
I am having problems updating a system database in SQL Server 2008. Perhaps there is a different way to do it, but I basically need to change/remove growth restrictions on certain log files for a bunch of databases.
Being lazy, instead of doing this manually for each of the 100 databases using SSMS, I thought I could create a batch query.
First, this information is visible through the sys.master_files view:
select database_id, name, max_size
from sys.master_files
And through this link ("How to update system tables in SQL 2008 R2"), I found out that the relevant database for this view is actually sys.sysbrickfiles:
But even after connecting with sqlcmd and using sp_configure 'allow updates', 1, querying the sys.sysbrickfiles returns "Invalid object name 'sys.sysbrickfiles'".
What am I missing here?
After a restart of one of our servers (a Windows Server 2012 R2), all private connections become public and vice versa (this user had the same problem). Stuff like pinging and iSCSI stopped working, and after some investigation it turned out this was the cause.
The problem is that I don't know how to make them private again. Left-clicking the network icon in the tray shows the "modern" sidebar, but it only shows a list of connections, and right-clicking them doesn't show any options.
What could be the problem, and is there a way to change these settings? I have to make one of the connections public (Internet access), and two of them private (backbone).
What's the recommended way to manage an ASP.NET web application, running under IIS 7 (on Windows Server 2008 R2)?
By "manage", I mean (at least):
I am not sure if I should go for a full remote desktop connection for this (if that is even appropriate for a server machine), or there is a simpler and safer way to do this limited set of actions.
If remote desktop is the only/preferred way to do it, I would appreciate at least a link to some safety considerations.
Why does index reorganizing take 3 times longer after I make an index rebuild?
I wasn't sure if this happens every time, so I made a test for the last month. I configured SSMS to execute Index Reorganize plans daily (a 4AM), and an online Index Rebuild weekly (Sundays at 5AM), regardless of fragmentation levels. Rebuild was set to fill pages at 85%.
What bothers me is that first reorganizing after a rebuild took much longer every time, and it doesn't make sense (at least with my understanding of what each of the operation does).
We placed a EATON Ellipse Max 1500 (900W) as the UPS for our HP Proliant ML350 G6. Upon first power failure (actually we only moved the UPS' input plug to a different socket), server immediatelly turned off, and the Health LED turned red and started blinking. UPS was in operation for about a week before that, with battery fully charged to 100%. Since our server's hot-plug supply is 460W, we are pretty sure we haven't overloaded it, the server was completely idle at that time (no web or win apps running except Windows Server core services).
Then we tried to do the same with a different, no-name older PC (Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM) with a generic power supply (not sure what the power is) and it continued working when we pulled the plug out. UPS load was less than 15% (measured in the provided Eaton utility).
We measured the UPS' output voltage using a smart oscilloscope and the THD of the UPS output waveform turned out to be 40%.
Did you have similar experiences? Could this be a faulty UPS? Or a faulty power supply? Or some HP sensors configured to trigger too strictly?
I wouldn't like replacing this UPS with the same brand, to get same results.

I also tried to do this while the server is turned off. While the UPS is working on battery, server will not start - as soon as I press the power button, Health LED starts blinking red.
I am configuring RAID arrays for a HP Proliant server running Windows Server 2008. We will probably use RAID10 configurations, but split it to several logical drives.
Is it reasonable to create a single dedicated RAID 0 logical drive just for the swap file?

Ok, at the end I realized I was talking nonsense.
Since I was planning to use RAID10 for these 4 disks anyway (write speed 2x, read speed 4x), I realized it didn't seem too justified to make a small RAID0 partition for the relatively small benefit I get (write 4x, read 4x) compared to the mess I would end up with if one of my disks would die.
My idea was something like this:
Once you create an Array out of these 4 physical disks, HP P410i allows creating several RAID setups which can utilize them partially.
Never mind, I will simply use RAID10 and have a reasonably fast, but much safer machine.

Found this question from long ago and decided to update, in case someone has a similar dilemma: at the end we simply went with RAID10 and upgraded our RAM to 32GB. With RAM prices these days, you simply shouldn't allow the server to touch the page file. Also, if you want a blazingly fast response, using a couple of enterprise SSDs is also not such a big expense like it used to be.
One additional conclusion we got is that, if you need more storage, than it actually might make sense to use smaller SSDs in your server and use a SAN for actual data storage. At some point, server storage capacity will reach its expansion limits, so it's better to keep this in mind and design your system for scalability.
I have a freshly configured HP Proliant ML350 G6 (initially diskless) server running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
Is it possible to use four 1.5Tb disks in an internal RAID10 array in Proliant ML350 G6 (That should give us around 3Tb of storage)? I am asking because I am only able to allocate partitions to first 2048Gb of my RAID10 array, last part of the disks is shown as "Unallocated" and there is no option to create any partitions there.
Technical specs indicate that I should be able to install a maximum 8x2Tb (here).
Is it possible (and how) to add multiple e-mail aliases for a single mail account on JAMES mail server?
I have tried using setalias to create an alias as shown here, but from what I've seen each subsequent call to setalias overrides the previous call and leaves only one.
