I'm running the following command to create a PDF out of a string of images (JPG+PNG):

convert -adjoin * "presentation.pdf" ; gs -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dPDFSETTINGS=/screen -sOutputFile=the_presentation.pdf presentation.pdf

While presentation.pdf is created, the_presentation.pdf is not.

I'm running the following command:

cat something | egrep "(abc|def)$"

On a server running Linux.

The same OS with kernel 2.6.18 gives the correct answer, while with 2.6.19 I get:

Illegal variable name. 

Apparently the $ sign is causing the error, but the question is why is it behaving differently across kernels?

I would like to validate a certain thought with you guys. Assuming that:

1. The device whose bandwidth I am measuring is an internal, Linux-based, router.
2. If a NIC is configured to 100mbps, the network is at least 100mbps (that is, the NIC's speed setting it what is limiting the bandwidth, not the network, its latency, etc.)
3. Elements such as CPU have no impact on bandwidth.

Would it be correct to:

1. Run ifconfig every 10 seconds
2. Calculate the bytes TX+RX per second based on the ifconfig's results
3. Multiply the bytes number by 8 (let's say this is X)
4. Get the NIC speed settings (10mbps, 100mbps, 1000mbps, this is Y)
5. Calculate the bandwidth percent usage as: X / (Y*1024*1024)

Is this correct? How does duplicity impact this calculation?

I'm experiencing issues related to OSPF (which relies on Multicast) not allowing us to work with enough adjacencies and was told to look at: /proc/sys/net/ipv4/igmp_max_memberships

Now, while it's easy to just increase this number to infinity, is there a way to know how many IGMP memberships are currently held by the OS so I can ensure this is indeed the problem and what number should be used?

We have an RPM created from a TGZ which includes a set of files to be installed at /usr/glassfish. For some reason, yum gets stuck while Running Transaction (stuck for hours, doesn't continue...). Tried to attach a screenshot but serverfault won't let me.

Any idea why?
