Is it possible to hide the my network places icon (using GPO or any other means possible) from windows explorer of all client machines on the network and only make available mapped drives that they need to access.
I have the necessary groups and OU's in place, I do not want to deny complete access to network resources, but merely want to take out unnecessary shortcuts and other details from the user account policies.
I am currently editing a GPO for user accounts of a particular OU and I want to disable removable drives access on a particular OU, problem is that all the client machines are Windows XP and the currently available policy works for clients that have Vista or above.
How do I achieve this without having to manually go around all the machines and setting the local computer policy to not allow access to removable drives (which will be my last ditch effort if nothing else works but its going to be a big headache)?
Using a Microsoft resources to sync my PDC to microsoft's time I used the following command as an administerator on cmd
w32tm /config /computer:<<PDC-FQDN>> /manualpeerlist:time.windows.com /syncfromflags:manual /update
but this returns << was unexpected at this time what can I do to solve this and sync my pdc to Microsoft Time servers to avoid any further hickups
EDIT: how do i substitue <<PDC-FQDN>>? I typed the name of my domain controller-domain name but that didn't work
My current Windows Workplace Network need some users to have restricted access to the internet and some users to have full access to the internet.
So I used a OPENDNS as it turned out to be the most simple and yet cost effective option (as in free!) So I granted those users limited accounts and restricted groups of sites like file and video sharing, social networking, adult sites, etc in the OPENDNS control panel and point those users DNS setting to the OPENDNS.
Now I have decided to upgrade this network to Windows Server 2008 R2 environment, obviously for better management and to make use of centrallized file storage and access restrictions on the file server and I'm stuck again because I want to have some computers use the OPENDNS servers to continue the restrictions as that seems to be the easiest way to do so. But adding all computers on the network to the domain would also mean that these user would have to use the server's DNS which inturn would give them full access to the internet. Also in this latest environment some users have not to be given internet access at all (at least for the time being). Can someone help me here!
Recently configured the IP address of the server 192.168.0.2, then I went ahead and configured its role as a domain controller (This process also configured the DNS). Now I would like to reconfigure the IP as 192.168.1.2
Will this mess domain controller configuration and also the users created on the network (stored on the AD db)? or will this wreak the DNS in anyway?
Is it possible to install antivirus package to the server which in turn protects all the pc's on the domain, this might seem a little far-fetched but then this would reduce the processing power on the client computers (which are part of the domain) and also would help to reduce licensing costs.
Could there also exist a concept of an antivirus server? amm.. just thinking out loud here, please do correct me if I'm wrong. If such solutions exist I would be highly interested in implementing the same.

Currently have one machine running my shiny new version of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, and have followed this tutorial to configure a new domain controller. I have a few PC's on the network, and they are currently connected to a Work Group.
Now since I am installing a Server I want them to be a member of a domain that I have configured for efficient management and control, not leaving out better security here.
I tried to change 1 computer on the network (running Windows XP) to the domain (instead of a workgroup) and it gives me an error "The domain controller could not be contacted" and the error logs show a DNS server failure.
While running the steps above I did recieve the follow error while trying to install the DNS: "The wizard could not create a delegation for the DNS server, and it displayed a message to indicate that you can create the delegation manually."
