I'm attempting to remotly install Debian Etch on a CentOS system using the tutorial here, when I get to the steps:

apt-cache search kernel-image
...
apt-get -y install kernel-image-2.6-686

apt is unable to find the kernel-image package in the repos. I'm finding it hard to believe that it's gone,am I doing something wrong, has the package been renamed, or is there another way to do this?

I have a Debian AMI that I built, its working great, but I cannot access any EBS volumes.

I have created an EBS volume and, using the EC2 control panel, I have attached it to my instance as /dev/sdf when I attempt to format it mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdf I get

mke2fs 1.41.3 (12-Oct-2008)
Could not stat /dev/sdf --- No such file or directory

The device apparently does not exist; did you specify it correctly?

Do I need to have something special installed in the AMI for this to work?

I have installed the ImageMagick extension for PHP on CentOS, but it does not have support for PNG or JPG, how do I add support for these file types to ImageMagick?

I am using FreeNAS on my lan to do some file/iTunes sharing but I'd like to add printer sharing to it so that I can stop using a second (aging windows) system. I'm not familiar with BSDs but I am comfortable with the shell (I'm a Debian admin) are there any good tutorials for setting up printer sharing (cups?) on FreeNAS?

I'm migrating a website from an old server thats being shutdown to a new one, and in the process I'm having some trouble with Apache and mod_rewrite. I have the following .htaccess file:

RewriteRule ^audio/(.*?)/.*?$ audio.php?id=$1
RewriteRule ^books/(.*?)/.*?$ books.php?id=$1

The audio.php and books.php are being called as expected except that the captured variables are not being passed, so in the case of the audio.php rewriterule I am being served the audio.php page but $_GET is empty.

To test what is happening I added RewriteRule (.*) test.php?a=$1 where test.php just dumped $_GET when I did that $_GET['a'] contained 'test.php'.

Nothing is showing up in the error log, and as the correct files are being served clearly the rewrite is mostly working, and the config has AllowOverride All what am I doing wrong?

I want to be clear that this htaccess file worked as is on the old server.

domain.com is the same across both virtual host directives

The problem is that books.domain.com is being served from the /home/domain.com/public_html/ directory

I need to monitor the amount of bandwidth a few processes are consuming however these applications don't have the options to do so, is there an application that I can run on Windows Server 2008 that will allow me to monitor the bandwidth usage of these applications?

I've seen a few programs that do this per NIC but I need it per application.

I've not realy worked with Windows Server since 2000 Advanced Server and I'm about to purchase a 2008 (standard) server for a project that I'm working on, are there any specific things I should be aware of?

I'm using nginx to server my static content, is there a way that I can set the expires headers for every file that meets a specific rule? For example can I set the expires header for all files that have an extension of '.css'?

I am in the process of building a website that will distribute a large amount (>150GB) of small files (~25Mb Avg.) to a large number of people, since both bandwidth and disk space are expensive with my server company, and we are on a low budget, I'm thinking that we should go with Amazon's S3 service to host our content, are there any potential gotchas or specail precautions that should be taken when building a high demand website around Amazon's S3?

I'd like to mount an FTP to a drive letter in windows, I've used Novell's NetDrive, but there are two main problems, 1) it tends to slow down computer alot 2) it doesn't seem to work at all under Vista.

Are there any applications that will allow me to mount a remote FTP to a local Drive letter, or is there a method built into Vista for it?
