I host a Magento website that I want to migrate to a new server without causing too much down time. The URL will stay the same but the DNS settings will be changing.

I'll be putting a upgrade notice on the current site to stop user interaction, zipping up the site and copying it from one server to another and when it's all set up I'll update the domain record to point to the new server.

My worries are about DNS propagation, etc. And specifically integration with 3rd party website such as PayPal, WorldPay, etc. My main concern is that once the site is moved someone who hasn't been to it before see's the new version on the new server. They put through an order which gets sent off to PayPal/Worldpay. Both these services use return/IPN url's to return the confirmation data back to the server. But if the DNS info hasn't propagated back to them they will be sending this data back to the old server.

I understand a way to limit downtime is to lower the TTL setting, wait until the current timeout, do the migration, then put the TTL back. But I read somewhere that not all DNS servers will accept a lower TTL?

Is there a better way to be moving this website?

I'm developing a web application that connects to an IMAP mailbox and fetches emails as part of it's functionality.

The application is PHP and I'm connecting like this:

Developing locally on my mac this was fine, I was able to connect and get emails. However now that I've put the app on my web hosts server I'm getting the following error:

Cannot connect to Gmail: Can't connect to gmail-imap.l.google.com,993: Connection timed out

After checking with my hosting provider they told me outgoing connections on port 993 are blocked. Is there anyway around this? Otherwise I need to upgrade to a dedicated server :S

I have a question. We develop client-server software using SQL Server on our clients networks. We are wanting to create a web portal that links into this SQL Server database but are unaware of the best practice when it comes to allowing remote SQL Server access.

We know that DMZs are often used for this sort of thing but are wondering what other methods there are?

A little bit of background. The sotware is a desktops app that connects to a SQL Server DB often running on a small business server (but not always). We would like to write a web app in PHP that can connect to each database on the clients newtworks.

Any info most appreciated,

I'm using the wamp server 2 for a web application. I can access files from localhost but I have it set up with access from outside via ip address which worked before I reinstalled wamp and now I'm getting a forbidden message.

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /ClientPortal/ on this server.

Is this an apache setting I have forgottent to change?

I'e been developing on my local wiindows 7 machine with sql server using the php_sqlsrv_53_ts_vc6 PHP extension.

I'm moving my application to the production server which diesn't have the extension yet. there is some documentation here but it doesn't say which version I need for Server 2008 R2 Standard. Threadsafe or non-threadsafe?

After running Mac OS X updates this morning when I run PHP projects on my local machine, when they were fine last night are now giving me errors:

mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: [2002] No such file or directory (trying to connect via unix:///var/mysql/mysql.sock) [CORE/cake/libs/model/datasources/dbo/dbo_mysql.php, line 540]

Has anyone had a similar problem?

I was given a tutorial on setting up apache2 and php to work with a java CMS called liferay. the problem is that the instructions were written for linux. Can someone help me change these to work with windows environment?

ssh into the server. 

cd /var/www/ 

sudo mkdir directory name 

sudo nano (or vim if you prefer) index.php 

Enter this into the text editor. 

<?php 
         echo "Hello World!"; 
?> 

cd /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ 

sudo nano (or vim if that's your preference) 000-default 

Make sure the first item on the page looks like this... 

NameVirtualHost *:80 

Make sure the <VirtualHost> directive looks like this... 

<VirtualHost *:80> 

Save and exit the file. 

sudo nano liferay.conf 

Make sure the <VirtualHosts> directive looks like this... 


Add an alias inside the <VirtualHost> tag. 

Alias /apps "/var/www/apps" 

Add a <Directory> directive inside the <VirtualHost> tag. It should look like this... 

<Directory "/apps/">

 Options FollowSymLinks 

      AllowOverride None 
      Order allow,deny 
      Allow from all 
      ProxyPass [http://localhost:80/apps/] 
</Directory> 

Save and exit the file. 

Restart the server 

/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

things like the directory site-enabled don't exist, etc. so am having a hard time here.
