I've got a couple 1400 Procurves that I need to clear the configuration on. I can't find any documentation on how to do this.
I found a document for the 1800 series that said to loop a cable from port 1 to port 2 for about 40 seconds to restore the default configuration. I tried that method but it didn't seem to do much. Anybody know how to do this or where I can find the procedure documentation?
I'm trying to add a user to a local group on one of my servers. I keep getting the following error once I've selected the user I want to add:
Windows cannot process the object with the name 'Domain Account' because of the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
I'm also seeing a lot of EventID 1053 errors which give pretty much the same error and then say Group Policy processing aborted.
The strange thing is that I'm logging in to this server with my domain account, the domain controller is running fine, and I can even get a listing of domain accounts to add to the group. It only fails once I select which user I want to add from the list. Any ideas as to what might be going on here?
I have a database that is constantly slowing to a crawl. The hardware for it is more than enough so I'm confident that's not the issue. When looking at resource waits through activity monitor, Buffer I/O is the highest by far. It's in the hundreds of thousands for cumulative wait times when the other waits are still in the hundreds. This has naturally made me start looking towards my Buffer I/O as the issue.
I set up a performance monitor to record full scans/sec and buffer cache hit ratio. The buffer cache hit ratio is consistently in the 98-100 range so everything seems okay there. My full scans/sec ranges from < 1 to just over 3. This seems high to me especially since it's not uncommon for it to be hitting 2+.
Does this seem like the most likely candidate for causing the slowness issues? Any other advice on what might be good to monitor if I'm seeing such high Buffer I/O wait times?
When a user is granted rights to something in SQL Server using the GRANT function where is it recorded?
Some of my coworkers were surprised when I told them that I can back up an SQL Server database while it's still running and wondered how that's possible. I know that SQL Server is capable of backing up a database while it is still online but I'm not sure how to explain why it's possible. My question is what effect does this have on the database?
If data is modified (by an insert, update, or delete) while the backup is running, will the backup contain those changes or will it be added to the database afterwards?
I'm assuming that the log file plays an important role here but I'm not quite sure how.
edit: Just as a note, my case involves backing up the databases using SQL Server Agent and the effects of database modifications during this process.
I'm trying to set up a machine to run performance logs on my servers. A few of my servers are on a separate domain from the machine and I can't seem to connect to them. No matter what I type into the Run As field I get an error saying "Unable to connect to machine".
The logging machine can ping the servers through DNS so I know there's no connection issues.
Is Performance Monitor able to view machines that are on a separate domain from it?
I know you can use a query to find out which databases have auto-shrink enabled but I'm wondering if this can be done for maintenance plans. Right now we only have a few maintenance plans so it's easy enough to check manually but I can see how it would be useful to have a query to do this.
I have to do a migration of my active directory to a new domain. I know that a lot of the SharePoint and SQL applications we run use domain accounts inside them and I'm worried how the migration will affect them. I'm assuming that as long as the account keep the same SID in the transfer I should be okay. Will it keep my SIDs the same?
So now that I've become the semi-dba at my current job I'm trying to improve a lot of the things that weren't really being considered before. One of these is trying to make sure that databases aren't set to autogrow and are assigned appropriate size limits. My problem is the SharePoint database. Since the databases for SharePoint could grow at unexpected rates I'm not sure what to do with them. I'm looking for some advice from other dbas who manage SharePoint databases.
I have a database that was recently shrunk and when I run sp_spaceused I see that it has 500MB of unallocated space. I'm trying to keep this database to a certain size (do to MSDE size restrictions for my desktop users) and I'm not sure if the unallocated space affects the overall database size. Is there a way to remove this unallocated space from the database?
I'm looking for some advice regarding the best way to set up my disks/partitions for SQL Server. Here are some of my major concerns:
How should the SQL files be seperated (data files, logs, temp)?
Is it better to RAID a lot of HDDs and partition the space or to make multiple RAIDs with fewer disks for each RAID?
Should data and log files be on a different RAID type?
Should the default databases (master,msdb, etc...) be located on the C: or should they be in the same place as the other data/log files?
One of the databases that I've taken over monitoring is set to full recovery mode but there is no plan to have the transaction log backed up. Naturally this has caused the log file to grow to a fairly large size. I understand that when running in full recovery mode you want to do a transaction log backup to clear your log files but I'm concerned about any backup failures.
I just want to confirm if my log file will be cleared if the backup fails.
