There are no errors in the log file, but this doesn't seem to add up to me. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something:

Currently I have one vSwitch with a few networks on it, which talk to other devices and use VLAN tags. I have Internet, Internal, Management (VMKernel), and WWW (LB pool). However, for things like SQL and WWW, the VMs mostly talk to each other completely within this host. I don't do vMotion, iSCSI, NFS, etc.. I have two standalone "redundant" vhosts which don't need to talk at the vhost level (the VMs do that by themselves if necessary).

I asked this a few years ago (ESX 3ish) on IRC and at that time I was told no and that traffic between VMs on the same host won't leave the host they're on regardless of vSwitch, IP range, etc.. IOW, it should act like a normal switch.

Is that true, or is it still the case with vSphere 5+? In this environment is there any reason to create a separate vSwitch and/or network for communication between VMs on a single host? The only thing I could think of would be to take load off the NIC, but if it's virtual and doesn't hit the NIC, then that's moot.

I am trying to set up a monthly full backup and a daily differential. The full backup is currently on the 1st, but I might change it to the first Saturday. I need to retain full backups for a few months (multiple sets).

My question is: on the first of the month how can I prevent the differential backup from running? I don't want them both going at the same time, or the differential to run based on a previous full...if that makes sense.

Is there a way to exempt certain days of the week or month from the differential schedule? I wasn't able to find any way to do that in the Maintenance Plan Wizard...

This is on SQL Server 2012 Enterprise

I know with Apache if you have an SSL certificate with an encrypted private key, you need to enter a passphrase whenever you restart the server in order to decrypt it and load the key/certificate. (Or you used to, at least.)

Does a similar thing happen on Windows with ISA/IIS and the built-in certificate store? Or, when you import a certificate does that obviate the need for entering the passphrase all the time? Does it ask when you reboot, restart IIS, etc.?

I'm trying to determine how impactful it will be and/or if I should decrypt the key...

Sorry for the noob question, I haven't done this in years...

I have a Cisco ASA with a working VPN, which I set up like five years ago, and I would like to forward http through to an internal IP address. The concern is: the only way I have to get to the ASA is via the VPN, and I'm not near the device, so losing connectivity isn't an option. I've been reading up on it, since I've forgotten, and it seems that I basically need to:

  1. set up nat source for int and ext IPs
  2. enable nat inside
  3. enable nat outside

Sound about right so far? I will need to do this twice, for two set of IPs (int and ext). Is it doable to enable NAT without breaking my connection? Will the typical way of doing it work fine?

I'm trying to get a JIRA install to work behind a Pound proxy that is doing SSL termination/"acceleration". Unfortunately it seems that JIRA (Coyote) is redirecting to HTTPS when accessed:

I want to try using LVM snapshots for backups. I'm working on an older CentOS 5 box, but I'm not sure if I can do it. From what I read, it seems like I need extra space on the physical disk in which to create a new volume. Is that the case? To me, from looking at the LVM command output, it looks like everything is full... It isn't, there is 13 GB free on the root filesystem, but I don't think that matters. This is my current state:

I've been struggling with a new VMware server we recently got. Everything installed fine, but I'm unable to manage the RAID card. The built-in monitoring works (kind of), but I need to manage it, not just monitor it. LSI support has been little help, just like their documentation, evidently.

I've installed MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) in different ways, on different machines, followed all sorts of directions, but the host never gets discovered in the application. Has anyone gotten this to work in ESXi 4.1?

Alternatively, what is a good SAS RAID card that is manageable in ESXi 4.1? One with RAID 6. I may be sending this server back (or at least the RAID card) if I can't get it working very soon.
