I have a Terminal Services user who is getting the error below when they try to RDP from a new PC that I have moved them to. We have 4 other TS users, neither of whom are having any problem connecting.

"The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol

Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your server administrator."

I tried deleting the license keys from here on the client machine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSLicensing. But this hasn't worked.

What is the recommended backup solution for copying files with weird & funny chars in them? e.g. accented chars, square brackets, ampersands, files beginning with periods in them. I'm using Syncback at the moment to copy files from a server to an external drive running NTFS. Syncback doesn't appear to copy these files and some of them I also cannot copy and paste via windows explorer. Is there any way around this problem?

I have an backup job that I want to set a file exclusion on. The problem I'm having is that every time I add a filter (e.g. *.log), the setting drops off as soon as I close the job. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?

I am new to group policy, so there might be something simple that I'm missing here.

I've created a policy at the User configuration level which calls a VBScript that pushes out a customized hosts file to all users in a particular Organizational Unit. It works fine with Admin Users, but doesn't work with Non-Admin Users.

I have changed the setting under the User Configuration as opposed to the Computer Configuration because I want users to have access to the customized hosts file on whatever computer they log into. Different departments in the organization use separate hosts files.

User configuration-> Windows Settings-> Scripts (Logon/Logoff) - > Logon ... [Run VBS file]

Note: I can't edit a hosts file manually using notepad when log on as a non-admin user. So I guess what I'm asking is if there is a way to get around this permissions issue with Group Policy.

I'm new to WSUS and I'm in the process of setting up a WSUS server. I'm wondering what is meant by the "Windows Internet Explorer 7/8 Dynamic Installer" category under "Under Products And Classifications"? Will this allow me to push out updates for IE 7/8 or will it also push out upgrades from IE6 or IE7 to IE7 or IE8. We're running IE7 at the moment, and want to avoid upgrading to IE8 at this point in time.

We currently have a SonicWall firewall, which does a pretty good job a blocking Social networking websites like Facebook and Bebo. The problem we are having is that sometimes we need to temporarily disable our firewall blocklist so we can update our company's page on Facebook for example. Whenever we do this, have see an avalanche of users logging on to their Facebook pages during work time. So what we need a way to block access while the firewall is down.

For the sake of argument, we have two groups of users - "management" and "standard users". "standard users" would have no access to Facebook, but "management" users would have access. Perhaps something like a host file redirect for non-management users. This could probably be enforced via group policy that would call a bat file to copy down the host file, depending if the user was management or not. I'm keen to hear any suggestions for what the best practice would be for this in a Windows/AD environment.

Yes, I know what we're doing here is trying to solve a HR problem using IT. But this is the way management wants it and we have a lot of semi-autonomous branch offices that we don't have a lot of day to day contact with, so an automated way of enforcing this would be the most preferable method.

I've added a HP 4250 printer to about half a dozen Windows XP PCs in our office without any problems whatsoever, but for some reason I haven't been able to add it to one particular PC today.

I go through the Add Printer wizard to add a local printer attached to the PC, enter the new port number as a Standard TCP/IP Port, install the driver. At the end of the wizard I get the following error message:

Full error message: "windows cannot connect to the printer. either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server."

This doesn't make any sense as I am able to ping the printer from the PC. The print spooler is running, and any firewall software on the local PC is switched off.
