I have two sub-sites set up in configuration manager. When the SCCM agent installs on the client machines within the boundaries of those sub sites they are assigned the site code of the Primary site, not the sub site code.
As a result their management server remains the main server not the sub site server.
I am setting up thes sub sites on cross WAN locations to cut down on traffic.
What could be preventing the clients from getting associated with the proper sub site code.
I have an enterprise pool deployment of Lync 2010. Can I install the group chat server components on the servers that make up my front end servers as well?
We are starting to put the finishing touches on our Lync server roll out and a few of our IT staff have been manually migrated over. Things are going well.
We've started to think about migrating our users. Roughly 200+ users and clients.
Everyone is currently using OCS 2007 (not R2) and connecting to that server pool with the older OCS client.
I'd like to make the end user transition as seamless as possible but we've sort of ran in to a Catch-22.
If I move the users on the back end the older client won't log in to the new server.
If I roll out the new client first, the new client won't log in to OCS 2007. I would hate to think that the two events have to be timed simultaneously.
We don't use OCS for anything else other than instant messaging and maybe the occasional desktop sharing. So maintaining the IM capability is my primary concern. I can live without desktop sharing till we've fully migrated.
What is the file share used for in a Lync Enterprise deployment?
Can I create the share on one of my front end pool servers or does it need to be on a completely different server?
I'm about ready to pick up a Microsoft Lync Server 2010 installation from someone else and I am not exactly sure where he left off. I'm not sure if I'm going to get any notes on his progress either.
I remember doing our OCS 2007 installation about three years ago and it was a massively complex setup process that had to be followed step by step. Has the Lync 2010 setup improved any? Is anybody familiar with the setup utility, and does it pick up where it left off gracefully?
Also, any gotchas or lessons learned you could share would also be greatly appreciated.
Ok, in the interest of full disclosure, I despise the network admin at work and today I think the final straw got loaded on to the proverbial camel's back.
I have been working in the IT field for nearly 15 years and have always used gpresult to identify and diagnose active directory policy issues. I have been engaged in a week long argument with our windows admin claiming that the GPO's are not applying to more than 400 machines we have. My claim is based on the fact that when I run a gpresult on any machine every policy returns "not applied (reason unknown)".
His response is "gpresult is not accurate, you have a corrupt profile."
Personally, I think I have a corrupt admin.

I'm about ready to start setting up a SQL data warehouse for some SQL Server Analysis Services. The data that I am going to slice and dice lives in an off site database that I don't control, so my idea is to set up regular jobs that go out and pick up new entries and insert them in to my own version of the table.
I am wondering if there are any good tools out there to help plan database space requirements. After only 5 months the table that I am interested in has already got almost 4.5 Million records and by this time next year I estimate that we could be generating 3-4 million records a month.
I guess what I'm looking for is something that I can feed the table definition in to, and then tell me how much disk space a billion rows would take.

Well, using Excel I came up with a theoretical 1098 bytes per record using the worst case scenario that a varchar(1000) was used in every single record to the max.
At 4 million records per month that's 48 million records a year and a worst case need of 50 gigs of disk space per year. Dropping that to a varchar(255) gives me not quite 16 gigs per year, and varchar(50) gives me ~6.5 gigs per year.
Anybody out there a better DBA than I am and let me know if I'm way off base or not?
