My VPS hosting provider just helped me to restart my Debian VPS after it failed to reboot. He told me there were file system errors but told me to refer to the logs in order to find out what happened.
What kinds of things should I be grepping for here and in which log files?

I have a new Debian squeeze VPS with which I'm using to serve a couple of web sites. I have an email address [email protected] that I would like to redirect to [email protected].
Can I install some script or service to do that? If so what would suit my needs best. I did some looking around already and found sendmail but that looks too complex and nullmailer but I'm not sure if that would work for this scenario.
I'm developing some HTML email templates and have a internal test tool that can send out test emails to my own email address for QA purposes.
Unfortunately this tool's settings page allows the mail server and port to be set but there are no username and password fields and would appear to rely on the mail server being an open relay.
I don't have access to such a server so I need to set one up maybe in a VM running locally. What's the quickest and easiest way to get this working? I've never installed or configured a mail server before although I'm used to using Linux from the command line and configuring/compiling from source or installing packages etc.

I got this working using Postfix running on a Debian VM in VirtualBox with the following changes made to my /etc/postfix/main.cf file:
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, reject_unauth_destination
mydomain = my.immutable.domain.com
relay_domains = my.email.domain.com
..where my.immutable.domain.com is the domain name of the sending address used by the test client app (which is not possible to edit) and my.email.domain.com is the domain name of my personal email address to which the emails get sent.
I'm building a PHP server backup script that sends me an email if errors occur. Now I have this code:

when I run it on the command line Iget the "message successfully sent" message, but nothing appears in my mail box (or spam folder)

With Apache 2 running on windows or other Linux distros (eg Centos) you can show a list of virtual hosts by typing httpd -S at the command line. You get a nice listing of virtual hosts and where they are defined. Debian doesn't seem to support this with the equivalent apache2 -S command, spitting out this error:
apache2: bad user name ${APACHE_RUN_USER}
At first I thought there was a problem with apache env vars but apparently everything works OK. However, I still would like to be able to see a list of all my vhosts. Any ideas how I can do this easily?
I have a windows laptop with openvpn client installed and configured to connect to the company vpn using a signed certificate / certificate authority file.
Now I'm setting up VMware Workstation with a Debian guest VM for development use which also needs to connect to the same VPN.
Can I use the same cert / CA files that I use on my windows host or do I need to generate new certificates? If so, then where fdo I put them and where does the config file go?
I've installed openvpn client on the Debian guest but the folder structure in linux is quite different to how it is in windows and I can't find any instructions anywhere.

I'm a Centos user and have just started my first Debian install. In Centos the ls command lists output in color to indicate whether an item is a file, directory, symlink and if a file/directory is world-writable.

I have VirtualBox 4 running on Win 7 with a Centos 6 guest VM set up for hosting my dev server. When I'm connected to my home network the guest can be accessed via a static IP address that I configured (192.168.56.2), but not when I'm in the office. I'm guessing that the DHCP server in the office doesn't have a gateway configured for the 192.168.56.x IP range. I read something about the VB host-only adapter that should allow me to set this guest VM up in such a way that I don't need to be on any network to be able to access the guest from the host using a static IP. I've not been able to find out exactly how to configure this though. Can anyone give me an example configuration, thanks.

On the guest I've set up eth0 to use the same IP address as the host-only adapter (192.168.56.2) but when I try to log in using Putty I still get "Network Error : connection refused". VirtualBox DHCP servier is enabled but I can't ping the gateway (192.168.56.1) from either host nor guest. There's no firewall running on either OS. What next?
I have the following config included in my httpd.conf...

where ${MODULE_DIR} is an environment variable that I am setting in my httpd init script (/etc/init.d/httpd) like so:
MODULE_DIR=/export/home/modules
this line appears before the line that launches httpd.
Now when I attempt to start the Apache server using...
/etc/init.d/httpd start
I still get the following error:

I'm working on a big web application which uses Apache 2.2 with a complicated configuration of virtual hosts that are defined in many distributed vhost.conf files which are then included into httpd.conf.
Is there any simple and quick way of listing out all of the various virtual host configurations in one place?
I'm a lone web developer with my own Centos VPS hosting a few small web sites for my clients. Today I discovered my httpd service had stopped (for no apparent reason - but that's another thread). I restarted it but now I need to find a way that I can be notified by email and/or SMS if it happens again - I don't like it when my client rings me to tell me their web site doesn't work!
I know there are probably many different possibilities, including server monitoring software. I think all I really need is a script that I can run as a cron job from my dev host (which is permanently running in my office) that attempts to load a page from my production server and if it doesn't load within say 30 seconds then it sends me an email or SMS. I'm pretty rubbish at shell scripting, hence this question.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
I have a fresh install of Centos 5.5 on a new VPS and MySQL seems unable to resolve the keyword 'localhost' - if I use 127.0.0.1 instead it works fine. I checked the /etc/hosts file which is as follows:

(I added the last line myself)...but still the localhost keyword isn't recognised. For example when I try to connect to my MySQL server using Navicat over SSH tunnel I get an error:

I have a VPS production server that serves web apps that I make for clients. I have an rsync cron job running on my dev server that does a daily backup of the entire production server.

I'm a total VPN noob setting up my first openvpn on a centos VM in my office which has a LAN in the 192.168.0.x network. I've successfully configured my laptop to connect from home - it gets assigned an IP address of 10.10.10.6. I think the server is getting 10.10.10.1 and when I ping it it responds. However when I ping the server on its noraml IP address (192.168.0.108) i get nothing.

... which I don't really understand but when I first got it working I was able to connect to my server (which has a couple of Samba shares) from Windows by typing \10.10.10.1 however that has recently stopped working since I rebooted the server having set the default runlevel to 5 to that I can set up a VNC client to use the VPN.
Does anyone know how I can a) get this working again and b) make it so that my server can be reached over the VPN by its usual IP address (192.168.0.108)?
I have a Centos VM with Samba server and a user on that machine called smbuser in group smbuser. I can connect to my samba share /home/smbuser from my Windows 7 PC no problem. Also on the Centos VM I have another folder /home/ftpuser owned by ftpuser:ftpuser. I set up another samba share to allow smbuser access to this folder but when I try to connect to it from the Windows machine I get an access denied error. So I changed ownership of the ftpuser folder so it was owned by smbuser and it works.
The problem is now that I can't connect to ftpuser with my ftp client. I need both means of access - smb for working on files and ftp for transferring large quantities of data as fast as possible. (Samba is slow). I tried putting the smbuser into the ftpuser group but that didn't work. Please could someone enlighten me - I'm new to the concept of unix groups and exactly how they work.
I have a Centos VM that has a Samba server with a couple of network volumes that are normally accessed from my Win 7 workstation. I temporarily moved the VM from its normal ESXi host to another Vmware server platform so that the ESXi host could be upgraded. The VM worked fine in its temporary location but now that it's been returned to the upgraded ESXi platform windows can no longer access the shares, giving the following error message when trying to open them:
\CENTOSBD7NU4\admin is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The specified network name is no longer available
The VM is visible in windows explorer and the shares are listed. Does anyone know what I should do next to restore the connection to the shares? Thanks
I have ESXi 4 on a home-built server with a 925GB RAID5 array (adaptec 2405 card) with a single Centos5.4 VM running on it. The VM has a provisioned size of 20GB which I can't seem to increase using the vSphere client. Now I would like to either increase the size of the Centos VM to use more of the free space or I would like to somehow use the datastore as another volume that can be easily accessed from the Centos VM. Does anyone know how to achieve this? Thanks.
