It's possible to force the users in a Windows domain to only have one active log in in the same time? How to do it?
FerranB's questions
HI,
We have an internal web server which is available through Internet and from local network. The server is located in the local network.
The current configuration is the following:
- To access through Internet you use http://webexample.com
- To access through Local Network you use http://myweb
The main problem is that the local users cannot share links with external users. Thats a problem for us.
I want to setup the following configuration:
- All users (local and Internet) access through http://webexample.com
- The local DNS server resolves http://webexample.com to the local Network IP (i.e 192.168.2.100)
Any other suggestion? Which is the best way to override http://webexample.com resolution in Windows Server? It can be done on DNS server or it have to be done in hosts
file?
We use Confluence mainly for documentation and want to make an step forward moving all the files (pdfs, etc) to Confluence but we want to determine if it's the best option.
As far as I know Confluence is a wiki and Sharepoint is not. How compare confluence and Sharepoint as file containers? Which benefits have Sharepoint over Confluence and vice-versa? Pros and Cons? Any experience on this?
When putting Ethernet cables for an office there are two ways to put the cables:
- From the rack patch panel a cable to each end-point (workstation).
- From the rack patch panel a cable to each room/floor switch, and from the switch another cable to the end-point (workstation).
About distances, from rack to the more far room there are near 100 meters. Inside a room no more than 15 meters.
We prefer the second option because is cheaper but no sure about performance issues.
Any suggestion? Thanks!
I've found a lot of times that "the big boss" in a company want to be able to install "anything" and to do anything in their computer.
Of course we can tell him that it is bad because the IT system administrators lose control over the computer, and so on.
Any irrefutable argument to convince big bosses that it's better to not have administrator privileges on their desktop-computer?
I have a workstation which suddenly hangs the applications working over shared resources. But not for other TCP connections.
For instance, I open windows explorer and browse on Z:\documents. Also I open a terminal server connection. The first one hangs and the second one works perfectly.
This only happens on that workstation but not on any other on the company. I'm discarded the antivirus because I've disabled it.
Any suggestion?
UPDATE1: @Jay, It hangs after browse or while using another software using shared folders.
UPDATE2: @Russ, There is no firewall more than the windows firewall and it's exactly the same that the other workstations.
We have purchased 20 licenses for Citrix Access Essentials (CAE) and there are 30 potential users and only will be 15 concurrent.
The way to not purchase more licenses is to manually revoke licenses through the Administration tool.
There is any way to revoke all licenses through command line or any other automatic way?
In some point of time (I don't know when...) the DNS on a Windows 2003 Server gets populated with all computers on Active Directory.
There is any way to repopulate it again? For instance, when changing the IP on a computer how to do to update DNS records? When dropping a computer, how to drop it from DNS Server?
Of course, a way is to do it by hand, but there is an automated way (say command line or menu option)?
EDIT: Robert Moir, Things I wish to do:
- Cleanup DNS entries for old computer that does not exists (dead computers or/and active directory dropped).
- Some computer have fixed (not DHCP) IP addresses (in our case we have computer on another building and for network provider reasons the DHCP is not working there fine, all buildings connect with VPNs). If we move a DHCP computer to another LAN wich requires fixed IP how can DNS get updated not by hand?
I think this is one area that is a pain for every sysadmin.
Users don't really know how much storage space they are using, and don't take the time to manage what is stored there, or how long it stays around.
What policies does your company implement to keep networked disk space under control?
There is any way to limit usage on folders with quota on Windows 2003 Server?
I know it's possible for volumes, but it's possible for folders?
I'm trying to obtain a consistent export (with data pump) from an schema emulating the CONSISTENT=Y
. Currently I'm executing data pumb in this way:
'/ AS SYSDBA' schemas=arrels dumpfile=arrels.dmp nologfile=y flashback_time='2009-06-03 12:00:02'
But when importing shows errors about inconsistency:
ORA-02298: cannot enable name - parent keys not found
If the data pump export are working with flashback_time
and, of course, the constraints are validated on export time:
- Why this is happening?
- Any suggestion to solve it?
Which are the most important things to consider when backup a Windows 2003 Server?
It means something like:
- Common mistakes.
- Things to consider to do a complete recover.
- The most important points to never forget.

We have a MGE U.P.S. (Evolution S 3000) with the ability to send mails when power down occurs. The thing is that the firmware settings doesn't allow to send using smtp accounts requiring password and our system requires it.
Anyone knows about any mail-server-tool which allows to do something like this:
- A client (the UPS firmware) connects to this mail-server-tool to send mail without password.
- The mail-server-tool sends again the mail through our servers providing smtp passwords.
I know it's a very strange behavior but the MPE service says that there is no upgrade to firmware and no way to solve it...
I hope I explained the issue nicely!!
Update 1: The main problem on this is that there is no access to SMTP server, then it s not possible to change the server configuration in this case.
The windows backup utility comes with an option to backup the system-state. What is this for? Has it a real utility? Can I recover that windows on another machine?
When I try to install VMWare server on a domain controller the installer says that it's not recommended? Why?
