I work with a startup incubator, who is regularly experiencing issues with their internet connection. Are there any red flags with the current setup that it inadequate?
It appears overnight our Master RDS mysql server went offline for 3-4 minutes. When it came back online the replication was broken.
On the slave, issuing SHOW SLAVE STATUS\G;
"Got fatal error 1236 from master when reading data from binary log: 'Client requested master to start replication from impossible position'"
In AWS monitoring, slave lag shows "-1.0".
Is there a way to get the slave replication restarted, or should I just create a new slave?
Are there any other well known cron alternative services to manage large amounts of automated tasks, such as curl'ng a url at a certain frequency?

I work in a small development team - PHP/MySQL app.
Each in-house developer has Apache/PHP installed and is accessing a Windows 7 box with MySQL 5.1 installed. Box is 32bit, Pentium D, 4GB ram, nothing tweaked with my.cnf. Network is on a gigabit switch, gigabit NICs.
I am curious why this setup is so obviously slow. Accessing an empty database on this server from my desktop is very, slow. 5 seconds or so just to list databases.
I don't expect it to be as fast as our production cluster @Softlayer, but 5 seconds to display an empty database seems a bit much.
Has anyone done specific things to speed up a office development setup utilizing a database server?
