We backup our OLD Tru64 UNIX system (Digital UNIX 4.0F) to DDS3 tapes using the dump command. We want to recycle those tapes to make future backups on when they get too old. I've found the mt erase command won't erase them, probably because the dump command puts blocks on the tape and it's no longer raw.
What's a simple way to erase the tape?
I've just exchanged tape drives between machines (both Unix Tru64). The device files aren't working now, and I have to do some work with them (will generate a different question). I created a directory to store the old device files to, but the cp command is treating them like device files and won't just let me copy them.
How do I copy the device files to another directory as text?
I'm trying to find out which dll file is causing my problems. I'm using Process Monitor. It lists the Operation RegOpenKey and an error "NAME NOT FOUND" for the result, but doesn't tell me what that name is. I looked at the column names I could add to the display, but none of them seemed like they would show me the name.
How do I determine the name of the file that RegOpenKey is working on?
I have enabled FTP using IIS in Windows 2000. It is just for receiving files from an FTP server to a directory, and is working fine.
I'd like to disable the web component of IIS, but keep this ftp "client" interface working. Currently, I've just changed settings to "choke" its capabilities, but is there a way to definitively turn HTTP services off?

I'm going to have an FTP Server send files to this box to store, and need to set up the FTP client architecture right. The dialogs look easy to setup the box as a FTP server if I wanted to, but not sure what to do to setup the client besides creating a specific user account.

BUT when I set up a CRON job, it runs and scps the file, but the contents are wrong, AND the file isn't on the server (when the rm line is commented out like I showed above). Here is the output I'm getting, but NOTE: the output changes, it varys in what it outputs:

Any ideas on why the CRON job is not running this exactly as the system runs it when the command is typed in manually?
EDIT: I have modified the script to loop and with all absolute addressing and modified the CRON file with SHELL, PATH and HOME variables, but the output is still erratic, here's the script now:

Notice the messed up dates on some lines, the '1' instead of 'CMX1' and the duped 'XIS1'.
FINAL EDIT:
It looks like that somehow CRON has spawned multiple processes that were tripping over each other. After kill all applicable processes it straightened out. CRON has a history (if you do some web-searching on it) of buggy multiple-process spawns, so beware.
I have the following relevant lines in a csh script:

The first grep on the local log file works great, but the SSH grep writes its output to the remote directory.
The line is coming out of the batch file as:
ssh SERVER1 ""grep "^01\/05\/10" <home/user/log/logfile"" >> serverlog_Jan052010.txt
When I type it in (with one less set of quotes of course) it works fine, I just can't get this to work from a csh script.
How would you get this command to output to the specified file on the local machine?

I'm trying to reference a file in the command line, but I keep getting the 'No such file or directory' error. The system uses SSH for the protocol.
Examples (that cause error):

How do I grep the lines out of this file that are between two dates, i.e. all the values for one day? I need to create a daily file with the contents from all the different server logs for that day.
I've a new entry that I put in the HOSTS file:

The first two entries ping, but the third one won't ping. I have a list of entries like this that work fine, any ideas why this won't?
I need to copy a deep directory on one windows machine over 'itself' on another windows machine. I can't seem to get the command to work correctly. The current problem is that it appears that scp is stripping the slashes out of the source parameter.
scp -v -r COMPUTER1:D:\A\B COMPUTER2:D:\A\B
