I am looking for an Iterative Resolver server - a server that would handle the DNS resolutions for PC users in an environment. I am well aware of the Microsoft DNS and Bind, and also of free services like Google DNS and OpenDNS.
However, I am looking for alternative solution which I can install on premise. Any suggestions recommendations? (paid - free - or open source)
Is there any detail on how bind 10 handles resolver timeouts?

The resolver timeout for the next round of queries is based on the number of nameservers configured in resolv.conf. The timeout for the second round of queries is 10 seconds divided by the number of nameservers configured, rounded down. Each successive round's timeout is double the previous timeout. After three sets of retransmissions (a total of four timeouts for every nameserver configured), the resolver gives up trying to query nameservers.
In BIND 8.2.1, the ISC changed the resolver to send only one set of retries, or a total of two queries to each nameserver in resolv.conf. This was intended to reduce the amount of time a user would have to wait for the resolver to return if none of the nameservers was responding.
How does the tcp ping or traceroute work? Does it take in account just the time it takes to establis the TCP handshake?
Also in ICMP ping you can specify the packet size, can this be achieved in TCP ping?
Is there any malware/spyware/virus scanning software that can be run via USB or other means to scan a windows server 2008? It needs to be something that does not need to be installed.
Does the Windows DNS server support RTT when used for recursive dns queries?
Are there any router servers, like zebra, for Windows Server?
Do DNS resolvers (the ones at the ISP or Opend DNS or Google) have specific timeout period of waiting for a server to respond? If so is it in an RFC or is it just custom to each resolver?
I heard a rumor it is 2 seconds, but have not seen anywhere.

What RFC and section defines what a resolver should do when it encounters a failure (so it tries to query ns1.site.com and it fails).
When a DNS resolver queries for a domain, the response contains additional records. The question is: "is the DNS resolver required to follow those instructions, or are they optional"?
