I have an Ubuntu Server hosted with Amazon Web Services, but I'd like to back it up, and know that I can restore it to a different server. (local dev server, competing cloud server, ec2 server in a different region, etc.)
This sort of thing must be commonplace, what's the generally accepted procedure / toolset to use here?
I'd like to keep some of the folders in my /etc/ dir git-revised, cause I'm quite new to server administration and am constantly messing around in my /etc/nginx/ and /etc/bind/ directories.
I've heard of people git-revising their either /etc/ directories, but that seems a bit like overkill, as at this point I'm only messing in those 2 subdirectories.
The problem I'm having is that if I sudo my git operations, I don't have the right pubkeys to push to my remote repo (bitbucket). But if I don't sudo, I need to mess around with all the permissions (again, not very pro at this).
Does anyone know best practices for managing their configs? or how I should solve this problem?

I have a webserver (running Ubuntu 12.04 server & Nginx) And I am setting up a number of websites on it.
I'm quite new to managing my own webserver, and I'm getting on pretty well except for when it comes to configuring the DNS.
I'd like to have the one server act as both the webserver and the DNS server (unless somebody can convince me otherwise..)
I've read through a couple BIND9 guides, but just don't understand why it has to be so complicated!
I would like one script, which I can run, something like: configure-dns.sh mydomain.com which would create the zones and entries for 'mydomain' and set the current server as the host, and authorative server.
Ideally I would like my workflow for a new domain simply to be:

I've setup an Amazon EC2 Instance, using the Ubuntu 12.04 AMI (ubuntu/images/ebs/ubuntu-precise-12.04-amd64-server-20120424 (ami-a29943cb)), and I'd like to get Webmin working (so I can setup a DNS).
After following the installation instructions on Webmin's site, the installer says I can login with any username/pass of a user who has superuser access.
The problem is that the EC2 instance only has 1 user "ubuntu", which can only login using SSH keys -- not a password!
I've tried creating users manually and I can't login as those users (even via SSH), so I think it might be a permission thing provided by the AMI.
Does anyone know the best way around setting up a login to my webmin?
Hey guys, bit of a mod_rewrite noob, I've got:
RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1
Which I believe says "If the file or directory doesn't exist, pass the request to index.php". I'd like another line which says "If it's a .jpg, .css, .js - don't pass it to index.php". Any help appreciated.

I have a domain http://www.example.com which has a hosting package and website on it.
I also have a http://example.no-ip.org domain which contains some content I would like to appear under the same domain.
Can I setup a .htaccess file at http://www.example.com/proxy/ which proxies the files at http://www.example.no-ip.org/files/
Similarly, could I host an entire domain in the same way?, e.g. http://www.example2.com/ proxying http://example.no-ip.org/files2/
Alternatively, if someone were to say "That's stupid, use this free (or super-cheap) dynamic DNS host:" I would probably accept that answer.
Our Sophos Anti-virus scans each night, but complains about files it can't access. Files that are in use by Firefox or Outlook.
Is there a script we can configure to run each night before the scans, which logs the user out of the machine?
Ideally, this would bring up a prompt beforehand offering the user the chance to remain logged in, should they be working late.
